I am currently a consultant with SC&A Inc., an environmental and energy consulting firm. In general, I provide health physics and applied statistical services to government clients (e.g. CDC, EPA, DOE, DHS). I spend most of my time coordinating support for a federal Advisory Board that oversees the execution of a compensation program for atomic energy veterans. In this role, I manage a team that helps the Board answer the questions: “How much radiation was a worker exposed to?” and, “What is the probability that exposure caused their cancer?” To answer these questions, I dive into scientific literature and perform independent mathematical/statistical modeling. The goal of this work is identifying hidden trends in the data that can be used to improve the compensation program. I have provided extensive technical support to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency auditing nuclear waste characterization programs throughout the Department of Energy complex and performing risk assessments of potential hazards. I have also done work for the Department of Homeland Security training hundreds of law enforcement officials to identity and prevent nuclear/radiological terrorism.

I served as a technical consultant in the areas of health physics and statistical modeling with an emphasis on protecting human and environmental health. Some current and past projects include the following:-Under SC&A’s contract with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health to support the Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Health, I provided technical expertise on radiation induced cancer causation. This involves evaluating historical site records, assessing individual exposure risk, and review of technical guidance document recommendations.-I audited U.S. Department of Energy facility transuranic waste characterization programs to verify compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations through on-site inspection of non-destructive assay equipment and off-site documentation review. -I instructed radiation detection training courses for law enforcement personnel in support of the Department of Homeland Security's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office’s global nuclear detection architecture mission. I designed and guided realistic training scenarios with live sources of radiation.-Worked on various contracts calculating effluent releases from sites with radioactive material licenses. I used this information to quantify consequential occupational and public exposures. Provides technical assistance on the eco-toxicity of radionuclides present at contaminated facilities.-Worked with the Advisory Team for Environment Food and Health to develop an after-incident response manual and references for emergency response personnel. -Served as the Safety Coordinator for SC&A which entails identifying safety concerns and implementing the emergency action plan when necessary.

I worked on a team that developed a model that predicts auto repair needed from vehicle information and symptoms. This involved normalizing free-entry text, natural language processing and supervised machine learning. To support the use and interpretation of the model, my team created a Shiny application.

Indianapolis, Indiana Area

For Eli Lilly and Company, I taught radiation-related training courses for radiation workers and auxiliary staff. I verified compliance with company policy and federal and state regulations through internal audits of approved laboratories and radioactive material users, generated a detailed report on audit findings, and implemented a radioactive material authorization and tracking system. I also calculated occupational dose from review of TLDs, thyroid, and urine bioassay results, calibrated radiation survey meters, prepared effluent release reports, calculations, and iodination filter change outs; and analyzed incinerator ash.

Ann Arbor, Mi

I worked with the NSF Water Division to certify products and equipment that treat or come in contact with drinking water to help protect public health and the environment and minimize adverse health effects. Product testing results were compared with PAGs and MCL drinking water standards.
