In collaboration with other nbn and HFC team members, my responsibilities encompass the HFC Architecture including network, equipment & test specifications for the migration of the Optus (Redcliffe) & Telstra HFC Networks to the NBNCo HFC Network from the Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) port to the End-User's wall-plate where nbn's Cable Modem and thence a Retail Service Provider's (RSPs) WiFi and Ethernet Gateway box connect to the End-User's devices.

Development of a QA process for assessing the quality and cost of detailed and high-level FTTP access network designs. Developed an Excel-based graphical network design tool for high-level DWDM Transit network designs that automatically updates DWDM and TDM traffic capacities on transit routes and at FAN & POI sites as fibre, wireless & satellite GNAF uptake increases.

Consulting to the Australian and New Zealand telecommunications industries, from research through product development to networks and telecommunications systems design. Included DWDM long haul networks, microwave and fibre backhaul networks for wireless access and FTTP networks. Access network focus was initially on FTTP-only but evolved to the integration of fibre and wireless networking technologies and products to achieve a more optimum and cost-efficient end-to-end broadband networking solution.In 1998, Ross Halgren (of Haltec) was contracted by the Australian Government via the Warren Centre to undertake an International Photonics Benchmarking Mission along with a commercial representative from the Macquarie Investment Bank. The purpose was to benchmark where Australian Photonics strengths & weaknesses were in relation to International research and commercialisation. A final report was produced which highlighted among other things, the need for the development of Integrated Optical & Electronic Circuits (today referred to as PICs) with multi-channel DWDM as an application example.

Redfern Broadband Networks (RBN) was one of the Redfern Photonics start-up companies formed to commercialise locally developed Photonics technologies & expertise. RBN's products required the integration of multiple physics & engineering disciplines, so Richard Lauder and Ross Halgren were natural founders.Our Vision was "Ethernet over Wavelengths" & target markets included Metro & Access, both Private & Carrier. Example applications included: Inter-Office Metro DWDM Networks; DWDM Backhaul Networks from the remote HFC RF Hubs to the Content Head-End; and CWDM Backhaul Networks for remote FTTN DSLAMs .RBN were one of the first optical companies to develop a 64 wavelength OEO ROADM (demonstrated at Supercomm'01 in Atlanta) which included optical backplane interconnects between client tributary cards; a pool of DWDM line cards; and an OEO switch fabric.In 2002, RBN developed the GigaEdge 8200 Extended Temperature Range CWDM ROADM - a first of its kind in the market. The GigaEdge 8200 was standardised by US Sprint for their FTTN DSLAM backhaul; was adopted by PCCW & China Light & Power in Hong Kong; and in 2004, was selected by Marconi as the best-of-breed CWDM product to complement their DWDM platforms - deployed into the Iceland Telecom Network for example.The founders of RBN took on multiple roles throughout its life to achieve success. My roles included: Chief Engineer, Network Architect, Product Manager and from 2005-07, I was responsible for Business Development for Asia-Pacific sales. Prior to this, in 2003 I relocated to the San Francisco area for 12 months to support AFC's NA sales and in 2004 I relocated to Coventry UK for 6 months to support Marconi sales of RBN's products .In May'08, RBN's assets were sold to Sorrento Networks Inc. (http://telephonyonline.com/access/news/sorrento-acquiring-rbn-0530/ ). I then provided support to Sorrento Networks for the tech-transfer, marketing & sales of the RBN products with the Sorrento Networks products.

Consulting position provided through my own company (Haltec Enterprises Pty Ltd) to Australian Photonics Pty Ltd Redcentre - objectives to migrate Australian Photonics CRC technologies out into Small to Medium Enterprises. Managed existing client base and sought new opportunities for the Photonics CRC technologies. Eventually I came to the conclusion that forming a start-up company (RBN) was a more likely way for this objective to be met and worked with Dr Richard Lauder to prepare the business plan for RBN as a Photonics Redcentre activity.

Provided AWANET and MILNET product management and general technical direction to AWA Corporate for Communications, Defence & Aerospace, Gaming & Gambling and Networking Business Units. Undertook Business Development activities where a complex technical sale was involved, such as the sale of MILNET communications interface cards to Telephonics in New York for their new TCOMMs military airborne communications management systems.> Explored new opportunities for AWA Corporate in the emerging Pay TV market in Australia including a trial Video on Demand over ADSL turnkey project for Telstra (using the latest DMT technology from John Cioffi's Amati company in Palo Alto) and evaluating the latest (for the time) HFC Cable technologies and Set-Top-Boxes. As part of the role, attending the US Cable Shows was an experience to behold. In 1996, as an active participant in the Standards Australia Digital Video Services Task Group, I was appointed the role of Leader, Reference Model Sub-committee, to develop and document an open-access reference model for multiple access technologies delivering video and broadband data to the home. Documented in SA/SNZ Publication MP74-1996 "Strategies for the Development of Standards for Digital Video and Associated Services", the Open-Access Reference Model supported access technologies and associated interfaces, such as HFC, ADSL, FTTC/VDSL, FTTH, MDS, Satellite & Digital TV as well as premises network technologies such as Ethernet, MATV, ISDN & WiFi.> Product Management and Business Development for MILNET product development and sales into Singapore Technologies for their Shipboard Integrated Communications Systems; and Telephonics (New York) for Military Surveillance Aircraft applications. Resultant deployments included the RAF NIMROD mid-life upgrade programs and various AWACS and Military Helicopter upgrade programs.

Provided product management and technical direction to the business unit for optical local area networking and other communications products. Applications included Air Traffic Control communications, Police communications systems, Shipboard and Airborne internal communications and control systems and Industrial communications systems.Supported AWA Defence & Aerospace in their bid for the ANZAC ship project and the successful bid for the TAAATS Air Traffic Control System:> For the ANZAC Ship bid, worked with CelsiusTech/BEAB engineers in Sweden to upgrade their existing Ethernet based Command, Control & Communications Management Systems to a MILNET based fibre backbone using the then-latest FDDI-2 Local Area Networking standard;> For ATC applications such as TAAATS, led the technology development of AWANET-100, again using the FDDI-2 standard and worked with the prime contractor Thomson-CSF to help define the requirements for the future integration of ATN data interfaces.

Managed the communications research laboratory of AWA Limited, which undertook research into optical fibre communications (including a coherent fibre transmission demonstration in 1989), new optical fibre local area network protocols, optical fibre sensors and optical test systems, voice compression, packet video communications, and other miscellaneous projects.Supported AWA Defence & Aerospace in their bids for the New Construction (Collins Class) Submarine and ANZAC ship projects:> For the NCS bid, worked with Signaal engineers in Holland to design a MILNET data bus based on AWA fibre-optic LAN technology, that would integrate the various sonar sub-systems, communications sub-systems, fire control sub-systems, distributed processor cabinets and distributed Multi-Function Consoles.

After a year of Officer, Engineering and Radio training, as Radio Officer, 486 Squadron, I managed a Section of 50 Radio Technicians responsible for radar, radio, intercom servicing and repairs for the RAAF Hercules (A, E & H Models). Also provided training courses to the radio technicians on new technologies such as "semiconductors and digital electronics"!
