Profile bio

About R. Hans "Rob" Miller

I grew up in the mountains of Western Montana and joined the U.S. Army at 19. Growing up, I learned the value of hard work on the five acres my family lived on, and helping out on my grandparents' ranch. The military refined that work ethic and taught me to pay attention to the important details of each task to make ensure the results of my efforts are something I can be proud of.In an era of mistrust toward journalists and news outlets, it is more important than ever to stand up tall, voice the truth and act with the integrity that being the "watchdog on government" entails. It is the responsibility of the news media not to give in to bombastic storytelling to make money but rather to create solid, honest content that educates the electorate and empowers them to make intelligent, informed decisions as voters and in their daily lives. It is vital that we remember that every right in the Bill of Rights - including the First Amendment - isn't just a right; it's a responsibility.I graduated from Texas State University with honors in May 2017 and since then have had covered a variety of significant events such as Hurricane Harvey, the COVID-19 pandemic, various situations of governmental misconduct and reported on the development of some of the fastest growing communities in Greater Houston and Central Washington.I have the work ethic from my upbringing and youth, the education through my military service and formal university experience, and the passion I have for serving the communities in my coverage area allow me to put journalism that matters in front of my readers.I am currently employed at the Columbia Basin Herald, a community newspaper serving Central Washington state which includes the communities of Ephrata, Moses Lake, Ritzville, Othello, Quincy, Soap Lake and several other small towns. Our goal is to build a community of informed citizens who work together to create a place to live we're all proud of.We also produce the Basin Business Journal and several other sister publications. The Basin Business Journal covers agriculture and industry in all of Eastern Washington. This provides us with the opportunity to cover a wide variety of topics such as aerotech development in Moses Lake, crop management, green energy solutions and the latest in EV battery technology.
