Robert Harbaugh obtained his M.D. from Penn State University College of Medicine and his neurosurgery training at Dartmouth. During his career at Dartmouth he served as Director of the Cerebrovascular Disease Center, Director of the Neurosurgical Laboratory and Residency Program Director. In 2003 Dr. Harbaugh became Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and Professor of Engineering Science & Mechanics at Penn State University. He has been promoted to University Distinguished Professor, appointed as Director of the Neuroscience Institute, was named an Alumni Fellow at Penn State and in 2018 assumed the role of Senior Vice President of Penn State health and the role of Chief Medical Officer at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 2023. He stepped down as the neurosurgery chair in July 2021. Dr. Harbaugh has been an invited speaker throughout the world, a visiting professor at 76 academic institutions, has delivered 32 named lectures and has been the honored guest of neurosurgical societies in 12 countries. He has served on five editorial boards, edited seven books and published more than 450 articles, book chapters and abstracts on various neurosurgical topics. He has obtained research funding from the NIH, NATO, USDA, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, industry and foundations. Dr. Harbaugh has been President of the SNS and AANS, Director of the ABNS, Vice-President of the AAcNS, a consultant to the NFL and the Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Registry. He served as Chairman of the Board of the NeuroPoint Alliance, Inc., as Chair of the ACGME’s RRC for Neurosurgery, on the Steering Committee of the National Academy of Medicine’s initiative on Clinician Well-Being, as Co-Chair of the AHRQ’s Registry of Patient Registries project and on the Governance Council of the FDA’s Devices used for Acute Ischemic Stroke Intervention (DAISI) project. Dr. Harbaugh has also served on the Board of Trustees of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Lebanon Valley College and the Saint Joan of Arc School. He has five children and is married to Kimberly S. Harbaugh, M.D., a neurosurgeon specializing in peripheral nerve surgery.
