For the next four years, she worked her way through library school with positions in the Music Library and the cataloging unit, also interning for a year in the Special Collections Library assisting in an archival photographs ID/organization project. Upon earning an MLS, Rhea found her first professional job as Cataloger/Reference Librarian at Motlow State Community College. This position was followed in 1997 by a cataloging opportunity at the Tennessee State Library & Archives in Nashville. Rare materials, genealogies, local histories, and audio cassettes of lectures and speeches were the exciting new formats added to Rhea's cataloging repertoire in her three years at TSLA. In 1992, there was a need for a Library Branch Manager at PSCC's Division Street Branch. For six months, I was able to fill the role on an interim basis and would have continued on long-term-- but a Copy Cataloging position became available at the University. I had determined by that time in my MLS degree pursuit that cataloging was my career goal, had already spent time as a technical services assistant in the department, so was offered the chance to move upward and begin training in earnest. In my short term as Branch Manager of the Educational Resources Center at PSCC, I was involved in many functions. The Division Street Branch catered to several unique populations of students: adult learners, ESL learners, at-risk students, and those enrolled in the paralegal-tract.The ERC was designed to support each of these elements while offering full-service library privileges. There was a section devoted to computer training; a section cordoned off for tutoring; a quiet-study area; and general stacks, a large portion of which housed legal materials. With the help of student aids who maintained the desk, I assisted with PC and Microsoft Office basics, helped paralegal users with LexisNexis database research, provided bibliographic instruction to first-year classes, aided students in proofing/refining/printing term papers, managed my student assistants, fulfilled reserve requests, kept serials titles current physically and online, and offered reference assistance to students and faculty. I also helped coordinate the use of the ERC's facilities which could be challenging given the tutors' needs for time with the PCs, and/or the faculty's needs for audio-visual equipment (or to bring their classes in for PC- and project-time). It was a busy place-- and there was rarely a dull moment. Six months is a short period of time in the grand scheme of things, but what I was able to learn, skills I was able to develop, people I was lucky enough to help- proved to be priceless.
