Wrote about the K – 12 education system in Central Washington, including the challenges faced by rural communities. In my downtime, I researched and reported a story about Washington's dying sheep industry. It led a to a three-day series that won the top prize for feature writing in the 2003 C.B. Blethen Awards.

In 1999, I convinced the newspaper's Executive Editor that the Reno Gazette-Journal needed a minority issues beat to cover the changing face of Northern Nevada and also the face of Nevada that rarely received coverage: American Indians. She agreed and I became the newspaper's first minority issues beat reporter where I wrote extensively about American Indian tribes.
