"Stop talking, Start prototyping!!!"As Research Lecturer & Project Leader in the Create4Care program, a cooperation of Erasmus MC and Hogeschool Rotterdam, I lead student research projects that solve problems healthcare professionals encounter in their daily practice in the hospital. Students and healthcare professionals co-create, co-design and prototype solutions together, combining the practical knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals and students of Healthcare, Engineering, Design and Information Technology. As PhD Candidate at Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care, my research aims to develop a ‘touchless’ technique for measuring the growth of premature babies inside an incubator, to replace the currently used measuring instruments for the weekly measurement of body length and head circumference, instruments that are clumsy to use and unhygienic and stressful for the baby. The ultimate goal is a smart 3D vision system that is safe and non-disturbing for the baby, and can measure growth by 3D volumetric changes, rather than 1D body length and head circumference. My original background is in the field of Industrial Design Engineering, with 13 years industry working experience as consultant designer. Since 2003 my field of work shifted to the education of Industrial Designers where in 2012 I definitely specialized in healthcare technology. Since 2013 I focus on design and engineering of medical devices for the hospital, especially for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric (Children’s) Intensive Care.Specialties: Industrial Design; Product Engineering; Design and Innovations for Health Care; Health Care Technology; Development of educational courses in the field of Product Design.

Phd CandidateErasmus Mc Mar 2019 - PresentRotterdamWorking on my PhD research project:PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB! Happy growing for premature babies by touchless growth monitoring:Accurate growth monitoring of preterm infants, based on bodyweight, length and head circumference, is essential to assess the effect of personalized food intake, and finally crucial for optimal neuro-developmental outcome. Currently used measuring instruments (e.g. a simple measuring tape or slide caliper) in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for the weekly measurement of body length and head circumference are stressful for the baby, inaccurate, and unhygienic. Our aim is to develop a ‘touchless’ technique suitable for anthropometric growth monitoring of preterm infants inside an incubator with no physical contact with the infant. The ambition is to replace 2D measurement with 3D growth monitoring by developing accurate and precise 3D scan technology suited to scan an infant inside an incubator: a 3D machine vision system for growth monitoring of preterm infants, that is safe, hygienic and minimal-disturbing for the baby, and with volumetric 3D-data as (extra) anthropometric parameter. -

Senior LecturerHogeschool Rotterdam (Rotterdam University) May 2003 - Jul 2012School of Engineering & Applied Science, department of Industrial Design Engineering (‘IPO Rotterdam’) In May 2003 I was responsible, in co-operation with two colleagues, for the development of a new bachelor education department for Industrial Design Engineering (‘IPO Rotterdam’). Starting from scratch we founded an educational institute, which at this moment consists of 200 students and a team of 14 lecturers. We started ‘IPO Rotterdam’ with a vision based on research in the related industries, and we now educate the best Bachelor Product Engineers, focused on the engineering for production phase. Our educational vision is to educate practical skilled engineers by simulation -starting from the first day- of the professional design practice. Being one of the key-factors in the development and operation of this department, I have gained a complete set of competences to set up and control a Bachelor educational department. -
