Responsible for engaging VOP residents with programs and services at THEARC and Building Bridges. Organize and promote events. Also, work to connect residents with needed social services offered by the District and nonprofit organizations. Find resources to assist residents who are presenting challenges, such as with rent, child welfare and behavioral issues.

Building Bridges to a Better LifeDC General Family Relocation PlanSummaryIn August 2018, WC Smith CEO Chris Smith received a call from Deputy Mayor Brian Kenner, asking for help finding the 91 homeless families then still at the DC General family shelter. The city was under a deadline to close the shelter and was having trouble placing the last families. Chris agreed to take this on, but he also knew that families moving from homelessness would need a great deal of support to be successful in their new homes. As a result, WC Smith started a program called “Building Bridges to a Better Life,” to provide both housing and the services that these families will need. ProgramHousing: Under the Building Bridges to a Better Life program, WC Smith is helping homeless families at DC General and in hotel rooms to find permanent housing. Most of the families will be moving to WC Smith-managed properties, Furniture and household goods: Working with foundations, nonprofits and individual donors, WC Smith has started a donation program to get all the necessities that the families need for a new home, including dishes, sheets and towels, pans and cooking utensils, and cleaning supplies. Services: All the families are assigned a case worker by The Community Partnership who will work closely with the family. To supplement this, many of the program providing partners at THEARC have agree to participate to provide education, food, and health resources. The Skyland Workforce Center, a project of BBAR, will help the families find employment.WC Smith anticipates that Building Bridges to a Better Life will be active in support of these families for at least a year after the families have been placed in permanent housing.
