As early as 2014, Uber's infrastructure was responsible for over a million rides per day; Uber had become an essential service. By 2019, there was well over a thousand microservices supporting the before/during/after phases, and tens of thousands of people not only keeping it running across 6 continents, but constantly innovating - by introducing change to the platform.Over the course of 4+ years at Uber, I collaborated to deploy many new technologies safely and securely. From sole authorship pilots to cross-domain efforts involving half a dozen teams, the sheer speed of growth is one I will always remember. While I served in more than a dozen roles, noteable teams included Core Infra, Cloud SRE, EngSec, and the Law Enforcement Response Team.

Twitter changed the way that voices are heard. Not only to encourage people to express themselves, with frequent short updates (140 characters or less), but in creating a platform that truly encouraged content to "go viral" thru retweet'ing. From major celebrity figures making announcements, or jousting with each other, to a little girl live-tweeting from her home, while bombs and rockets explode around her.Something many people may not know, is that Twitter is likely the single largest content generator of SMS messages world-wide, enabling people to receive updates on their mobile devices world-wide, even where cellular data isn't robust.A very small team within Twitter supports the system, software, and infrastructure to deliver SMS messages to mobile users world-wide. It was my pleasure to work with many of the talented people who've been part of that team, past and present.

Tango is an increasingly well-known startup, competing with much larger rivals for a share of both the mobile video call market, but also 'social' as a vertical. Over 3x growth in 1.5 years, a multitude of new software features, partner integration, and substantial infrastructure scaling and evolution.Rapid growth means rapid reaction, supporting dozens of software components and nearly a dozen development teams, following Agile methodology and pursuing continuous deployment.Video calls are very sensitive to latency, and so are users. If it doesn't work, _now_, that's a problem. Doing it successfully requires having a global presence in all your major markets, understanding traffic patterns, responding to seasonal requirements, and resolving unusual activity.From an operational standpoint, that means leveraging monitoring (lots of monitoring), with oodles of metrics, deploying onto a mixed stack of platforms ('bare metal', EC2, VMware, Citrix, etc.), being able to effectively work with a mix of custom software, from database-driven Java apps, to full stand-alone daemons.Not unlike working in a kitchen, it can get hot in there, and working with competent teams makes a huge difference. Properties and audiences have passionate engagement, while revenue is derived from running Clean advertising campaigns, with a specialty of spotlights that are actually of interest to the viewer, and don't just feel like an infomercial.With multiple premier properties (Typepad, ReadWriteWeb, Dogster, Remodelista, XOJane) hosted across multiple platforms and technologies, tracking and supporting things cohesively requires a team, and planning for ongoing growth is not trivial.From the building blocks of AAA, CI, change management, incident reporting, monitoring and virtualization, to tying it all together with a successful Agile lifecycle, BCP, confidence in PCI, etc., there's a lot involved, especially during rapid growth.It's a great challenge to develop a blueprint for success, and rewarding to feel confidence in deploying it.

From long-term planning, to daily operation, ownership of hardware and custom/GPL software in the Broadcast Center (complex network of systems providing content and service to set-top boxes, and other clients.)Responsible for the continued uptime of the TiVo service for 4.5mil+ set-top boxes, etc. Involved in the custom software from the design phase, I make sure it all works, scales, and operates as expected. When things run smoothly, it's not by accident.TiVo has an incredible pool of engineering talent, and management that excels at harnessing it. Being involved and communicating with other departments is a key requirement; there is a flow that exists, and asking the right questions, or being there to answer them, requires being part of that flow, and helping it move in the right directions.
