Research Scientist

Current

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

My work at Autodesk Research explores spatial analysis and multi-agent simulation in the architectural design and building science domains. My colleagues and I received the overall Best Paper Award at both the 2010 IBPSA-USA Conference, for a method that customizes simulated human behavior, and the 2016 SpringSim Conference, for a simulation development environment called DesignDEVS. I served as the 2014 Co-Chair and 2015 Program Chair of the Simulation for Architecture and Urban Design (SimAUD) Symposium, as well as the 2017 Program Co-Chair of the Theory of Modeling and Simulation (TMS/DEVS 2017) Symposium. I was the lead developer on an open source framework called SyDEVS that supports systems modeling and multiscale simulation, and two publicly available packages supporting 2D and 3D space analysis in Dynamo.

Sep 2009 - Present

Graduate Student

After 3.5 years working in the mining industry, I returned to academia to pursue a previous interest in biomedical engineering. My focus at Carleton was on the modeling and simulation of biological systems.

Sep 2007 - Sep 2009

R&D Engineer

Sj Geophysics

This very rewarding job had me leading teams of 5 to 7 workers in mineral exploration projects in Tasmania, Oman, Cyprus, Alaska, Nevada, and all over Canada. We used electrical signals to take thousands of measurements over areas of a few square kilometers, obtaining 3D results with parallelized inversion software. After designing the necessary signal processing algorithms, I was the first in the company to perform a survey with digital acquisition devices. I then implemented the company's transition from analog to digital technology, training other operators and improving both hardware and software. Hundreds of surveys have now been conducted with the new system.Other contributions included a database application for data storage and processing, 3D visualization software, and mathematical formulas for error analysis.

Sep 2003 - Feb 2007

Coop Student Programmer

Laser Zentrum Hannover

Hannover's Laser Research Centre investigates various applications of laser technology. Our project was the automatic classification of faults occurring during industrial laser welding processes. I recall bashing dents in sheets of metal, then frying them with million-dollar lasers in order to collect relevant optical data. An algorithm I designed successfully identified various types of faults from the optical signals.

May 2002 - Aug 2002

Coop Student Programmer

Ubc – Earth & Ocean Sciences Department

It was during this placement, studying the optical properties of clouds, that I first developed an interest in scientific programming. (I later went so far as to design my own programming language, described at www.caltha.ca.) My primary task was the parallelization and optimization of ray-tracing software for 3D cloud fields. This work led to the co-authorship of a paper, titled "Monte Carlo Simulation of Solar Reflectances for Cloudy Atmospheres," published in the Journal of Atmospheric Sciences. My other contributions included satellite image processing code, and an open source Python interface to HDF scientific data files.

May 2001 - Dec 2001

Coop Student

My primary role at BC Hydro was to advance the company's techniques for distribution circuit modeling. This task involved the design of circuit modeling algorithms, and the evaluation and documentation of power simulation software.
