Revamped configuration and storage of the 20+ PostgreSQL database including security, namespaces, vacuuming and failover replication.NWC utilizes RedHat’s CEPH S3 storage solution (2PB+). Upon arrival, the CEPH object store instance was in failure mode. Working with a CEPH expert, was able to stabilize the object store and make it operational again.Worked on refactoring the existing data services and associated APIs. Old system was too tightly integrated making updates expensive and time-consuming. Designed new model for handling data services, developed presentation and pitched to management. Once approved, was promoted to technical lead and led the team in carrying out the new data services plan.

    Responsible for the design, architecture project management and launch of multiple Mobile/Web/API/DB solutions for both B2B and B2C clients, with respective users on four continents and in four languages. Each client presented a basic design and feature set. Rhys built the teams, identified necessary technologies, architected the solution, created the project plan and managed every aspect through launch using both Agile and Waterfall models.Mobile solutions included IOS (phone/tablet) and Android using native languages. Web applications utilized Bootstrap to be responsive for all environments. Backend solutions including both the design and architecture of the RESTful JSON API as well as the SQL database. Various backend integrations with Twilio, SendGrid, Firebase, JSMPP and more was required.Rhys was responsible for all operational considerations. He configured load balancers, server instances and more on both AWS and Google Cloud Platform. As part of this work, he designed upgrade and deployment solutions. He also wrote monitoring and data correction services to allow self-maintenance and issue identification for optimal system performance. He wrote specs and managed the development process using best of breed applications (wiki, bug tracking, support, monitoring, etc.).In developing the product, determined best integration partners. Worked with Twilio to handle SMS and voice calls, integrated with customer-supplied SMPP gateway, SendGrid for email messaging, Firebase for crash reporting and push notifications and suite of Google APIs for geocoding, URL shortening and more.Negotiated and hired outside specialty consulting firms to supplement internal staff. Managed day to day activities of internal staff, provided technical guidance when needed. Determined best of breed applications for internal use (wiki, bug tracking, support, monitoring, etc.) Developed long-term technology and development strategy based on company’s business goals.
