All aspects of management and maintenance of the permanent force and the civilian database on the SANDF Mainframe. - This included the testing of new systems, the optimizing of existing systems and the phasing out of old systems. - My main function was to identify problem areas on the Mainframe. - Involved with the planning, management and maintenance of the GS1 LAN in Army HQ. - Used MS LAN Manager 2.2 as the primary Network Operating System. - The Protocol I helped implement on this LAN was TCP/IP. - The LAN had about 350 workstations and 577 users of which GS1 forms the biggest part. - Responsible for the installation of the hardware, the loading of software and training the users. - Responsible to rectify any hardware or software problems that might occur in GS1. - Responsible to render a advisory service to management in the field of computerization of office functions. - This network was one of the larger implementations undertaken and the core ran on a 3COM switch with Cisco router to connect to the Wan. - Several kilometres of fibre optic cabling was installed in this network and in the region of 25 hubs was used to connect all the machines together.
