Big Story Bookstore is Central Oregon’s biggest independent bookstore. In 2017 Big Story was established by Josh Spencer, founder of the world-renowned The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles. Although it’s smaller than The Last Bookstore, visitors to Big Story can expect the same attention to artistic design and a hand-picked selection of classic, popular, and uncommon books and movies.Fast forward to 2020, social unrest, pandemic, closure of their business, and feeling worn out from the grind of the big city Rian & Alyssa Heim made the decision to move from their home of 20+ years in Los Angeles to Bend in search of a slower pace, access to nature, and to pursue work that they could look forward to everyday. After taking a job at Big Story Rian began thinking about what owning and operating the store would look like. After talking with Josh and his wife Jenna about the opportunity, the transition of Big Story seemed to make sense for everyone involved. The opportunity to own their own bookstore and expand on what Josh had built seemed too amazing to pass up. Locally owned and operated by Rian and Alyssa, Big Story has a bright future and a story that will continue to serve the Bend community.

The vision was to completely remodel and update this Mid Century Modern post and beam home while maintaining the stunning architecture and integrity. The redesign consisted of the removal of walls, smoothing the ceilings, new paint, berber carpet, white oak hardwood flooring, limestone tile, Belmont walnut and high gloss white shelving and cabinets, 3/4" quartz countertops, George Nelson lighting, SubZero/Wolf/Cove appliances, Hansgrohe faucets, Duravit ceramic finishes, Heath Ceramics tile, and smart home systems. Original elements that were intentionally kept include the post and beam architecture, indoor/outdoor living, sunken living room sofa, hanging fireplace, cedar paneling, parquet flooring, and courtyard globe lighting.

Awareness and development of my own personal “blind spots” as a leader. Gained invaluable understanding of team dynamics and acquired the tools to apprentice and build leaders within the team. Experienced transformational growth personally that has improved my relationships at home as well at professionally.

Collaborated with in-house Account Managers to design print materials for clients including Sony, General Mills, Lowe’s, Jose Cuervo and American Express. Experiencing a professional team, day-to-day operations, and the successes and failures of a small business owner provided invaluable career learning and knowledge.
