Founder, DirectorQuoba Systems Apr 2020 - PresentMelbourne, Victoria, AustraliaQuoba Systems designs and manufactures dedicated laser micromachining systems, provides process development and contract manufacturing services. Laser micromachining enables ultra-high precision and high speed processing of virtually any material including metals, ceramics, glasses, composites, crystals, plastics and other. We optimise laser processes and systems for various micromachining tasks including cutting, drilling, milling, engraving, marking, surface texturing and functionalisation, welding and more. We utilize a broad range of laser wavelengths (~250nm to ~10um) and various pulse durations (from continuous wave to ultrashort - femtosecond) to provide an optimal solution for each task.Ultrashort pulse lasers elevate laser micromachining to a whole new level of precision, performance, and capabilities. They offer significant advantages including non-thermal material removal, ultra-high precision, burr-free machining, ability to process ultra-hard, brittle or heat sensitive materials. Ultra-short pulse laser micromachining enables large area and high speed surface texturing with micron scale or even sub-micron features, selective layer removal, tempered and non-tempered glass processing and most often eliminates or significantly reduces post-processing needs.Laser micromachining is a rapidly growing technology offering significant advantages for semiconductor, electronics, medical, automotive, aerospace, military and many other industries. Please contact us for a free proof-of-concept trial to see if laser micromachining may help with your applications.Founder and Director Dr. Ricardas Buividas has a PhD in physics and 10+ years of experience in high-tech industries developing custom laser micromachining and optical inspection systems for research laboratories and companies in semiconductor, hard disk and pharmaceutical industries including technology giants like Seagate, Amkor, West Pharmaceutical, Continental and more. -
Physicist - Ultrafast Lasers And ApplicationsLastek Pty Ltd Aug 2013 - PresentMelbourne, AustraliaLastek is a leading supplier of photonic instruments, lasers, optical and opto-mechanical components and positioning systems in Australia and New Zealand. My position:Physicist - Ultrafast Lasers and ApplicationsResponsibilities:- Sales, installation and technical support for Light Conversion products including femtosecond lasers, optical parametrical amplifiers, pump-probe spectrometers and more.- Sales, installation and technical support for femtosecond laser micromachining systems from Workshop of Photonics and Femtika.- Installation and technical support for STED supper-resolution microscopes from Abberior Instruments GmbH and light sheet microscopes from Lavision Biotech GmbH.- Promotion of products in local and international conferences.I have a proven track record of successful sales of femtosecond laser systems and happy customers in Australia. The process of such sales can be rather complicated and extend to months and even years, it often requires a tender process.I am a factory trained service engineer for Light Conversion, Workshop of Photonics, Abberior and Lavision Biotech products able to solve technical issues on site. That often saves time and money should the system be required to ship back to the factory or factory service engineer required to come for service.

Postdoctoral ResearcherSwinburne University Of Technology Jan 2014 - Aug 2015Melbourne, AustraliaProjects:• “Ultra-fast alchemy: a new strategy to synthesise super-dense nanomaterials” between Swinburne University and Australian National University. My task was to investigate if new phases could be created in olivine (the most abundant material on Earth) via the micro-explosions created by ultra-short laser pulses focused in the bulk of olivine. I performed laser fabrication experiments and characterized samples at the Australian Synchrotron using soft X-Ray spectroscopy.• “Combined Optical and Electrical Stimulation of Auditory Neurons” between Swinburne University and Bionics Institute, Melbourne.I designed and developed the optical fiber-based system for in-vivo laser stimulation of guinea pig auditory neurons, assisted medical staff during optical stimulation experiments.• “Collaborative advanced spectroscopy facility for materials and devices,” project between five Australian universities: Melbourne, Sydney, RMIT, Adelaide and Swinburne.Project aims to build a microscope based spectrometer which would enable reflectance, transmittance and epi-fluorescence measurements from small areas (down to several micron) in upright and inverted microscope configurations in a very broad spectral range covering 190 – 2100 nm. 2D array detectors are used for hyper spectral imaging in 190 – 1700 nm range. System is designed to include a point detector to cover long wavelength range up to 2100 nm. High resolution (10 – 20 nm bandwidth) monochromator and spectrometer are used for spectral characterization. I have been involved in the whole project process from its initial concept design to the assembly and performance tests. I have done optical design, lead mechanical design, selected subsystems and components, done control software architecture, assembled and tested the whole system.Project is still active, system is waiting for some upgrades; I am currently involved in the project via Optotech Pty. Ltd. -
