About Ricardo Sierra

I've spent the last 32 years working in nature education and wilderness programs for youth and adults, and we have had tremendous success in creating transformational programs that change lives. • Currently I'm creating online programs for educators, camp counselors, after school leaders, homeschoolers and moms to help them give their children powerful nature experiences using the principles and skills I've developed over my career. Getting these tools into the hands of those people who are on the front lines with our youth is critical in helping our educators build strong, healthy individuals who can meet the coming challenges of tomorrow. • I've been on the TEDx stage in 2018, sharing about the crisis unfolding in our communities and how nature and skills and connection can help make a difference in our children's lives if we take action.• https://www.ted.com/talks/ricardo_sierra_sierra_saving_our_igeneration_kids_from_nature_deficit_disorder• I've worked extensively with Waldorf Schools in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic regions leading their 'Class Trips' in wilderness skills and adventure, and our organization continues to work in 14 local schools in their after school programs through a 21st Century grant that is free for the participants. • I am constantly learning about how we as nature educators can better understand how to share our message of the value of nature experiences and how important they are to the development of who we are as human beings. Communication, change and inspiration remain vital aspects of our work that are the key to getting more people outside and into nature.• My approach to teaching and mentoring involves practical life skills, bonding and connection as well as nature immersion, as a three pronged system I call 'The Natural Advantage'. I believe that the more we can simplify and reduce the barriers that distort our work, the more effective it will be at building a much larger national movement that gets us reconnected to ourselves and nature.

  • Hawk Circle Wilderness Education
    Executive Director
Hawk Circle Wilderness Education Feb 1989 - Present
I have been the director of this program since it's inception in 1989, when it started as a small summer camp. We have grown over the years to include adult workshops, intensive training programs, earth skills semesters and even a year round program immersion into learning native american and aboriginal living skills. We also lead powerful school class trips, summer camps, after school enrichment programs and many other contract events. My position includes writing educational curriculum, managing website and marketing, staff training, fundraising and development, teaching and doing programs and outreach in our community and nationally. I am several different directors rolled into one.....There is a lot to add about this position, but suffice it to say that it is all consuming, a vision rather than a job description. I love doing it, and being part of my team.
