About Ricardo Lodroño Marin
I am a visual designer in origin whose professional career has led him progressively (and somewhat unconsciously) to move away from the creative path. Now I'm involved on a self-taught journey to going #BackToTheGraphics through design, systems, and coding. Having been on both sides (meta + matter) allows me to view design problems from both a visual and technical perspective, providing me with the necessary vocabulary to collaborate both with designers and developers. I approach visual design as a mix of the concepts bound to both technology (rationality, systematization, standardization, parametrization) and art (intuitiveness, expressiveness, exploration, freedom), feeling motivated by integrating visual design and development and approaching design with a systemic point of view.

Visual Designer
Over the past year I've been leading and participating in the development of a Design System that seamlessly integrates design and code. 1. At its core is a headless Figma Design System, where all visual properties are decoupled from the components themselves and managed within dedicated Figma variable libraries. This approach ensures that the design system remains highly adaptable, making theming and customization straightforward for future projects. Designers can easily switch between different themes and styles, including light and dark modes, by leveraging Figma's variable modes.2. To bridge the design-to-development workflow, we established a robust mapping strategy using Tailwind.css configuration tokens and utility classes, directly referenced within Figma. This setup guarantees that visual designs translate accurately into code, maintaining design fidelity and consistency.3. On the development side, we've built an Angular Library that includes a full suite of components developed on top of Angular Material and distributed as an NPM package, ensuring seamless integration into various projects. 4. Supporting this system, we've constructed a comprehensive Storybook that acts as the unique source of truth for developers, designers, and stakeholders. It documents each component's API, showcases diverse use cases, and includes patterns and layout examples, providing an accurate reflection of what is currently being built. This ensures that the Storybook isn't just documentation, but the real design system in practice, fostering clear communication and alignment across teams. This system is set to streamline design and development processes and promote consistency, scalability, and ease of thematization for future application developments.
Team Leader / Frontend / It Department
During this time I was managing and coordinating a small team of developers while also taking on the role of the team’s frontend developer. I embraced agile methodologies and regularly assumed the responsibilities of a Scrum Master. Our work involved the development and maintenance of web applications tailored for both customer-facing and internal use, utilizing technologies such as .Net Core, Angular, and Vue.A key part of my role was collaborating closely with stakeholders and Product Owners to define new functionalities and assess their technical feasibility. I applied product trio methodologies and engaged in product discovery processes, ensuring a user-centric approach to development. Additionally, I captured complex requirements, creating diagrams and visualizations to simplify and clarify these specifications for the development team, enhancing communication and streamlining project execution.
Ux / Ui Design / Frontend / It Department
My role consisted of enhancing the UX/UI of a client-facing shipping tracking web application. I led the redesign, focusing on delivering a more intuitive and visually appealing experience to improve user satisfaction and engagement. To test and refine new functionalities, we created interactive prototypes using Sketch and InVision, enabling the sales team to present realistic demos to clients. These prototypes proved invaluable for gathering feedback directly from users and stakeholders, allowing for adjustments that aligned closely with customer needs. In addition to design, I contributed as a frontend developer on this project, implementing the new UI and functionalities. I also supported the development of other internal web applications for the business, applying my frontend skills to enhance usability and performance. This experience allowed me to blend my design profile with practical development skills.
Professor Of The Web Module In The Master'S Degree In Digital Creation.
For over a decade, I had the rewarding experience of teaching in the Master’s Degree in Digital Creation program at the Catholic University of Valencia. From the very inception of the program, I contributed to the "Web" module, where I taught web design and layout fundamentals, focusing on HTML, CSS, and jQuery. My role involved not only delivering technical knowledge but also structuring lessons in an engaging, accessible way to support students in building a strong foundation in web development.Teaching became one of the most enjoyable aspects of my career. I relished the opportunity to organize content and lessons, create hands-on projects, and share industry insights with students, helping them to gain practical skills and confidence in their web design abilities.
Graphic Design / Web Design And Development
Wordpress Developer / Frontend Layout Developer
During my time at a digital projects agency, I focused on developing custom WordPress sites, handling both the front-end layout (HTML/CSS/JS) and back-end templates and full WP admin configuration. Additionally, I contributed to develop web layout and templates for large-scale Laravel applications. This role allowed me to deepen my expertise in both WordPress and Laravel.
Graphic Design / Web Design And Development
After closing my own design agency, I transitioned into freelancing, where I took on a variety of creative projects that allowed me to leverage my skills in both web and graphic design. My client base was diverse, ranging from businesses to artists in dance, theater, and music. In addition to web projects, I developed brand identities and graphic design work for these clients. I also collaborated with other design agencies on selected projects. Freelancing allowed me to enjoy a dynamic mix of projects and clients, from business branding to creative arts, while honing my adaptability and client communication skills.
