I am acutely aware of the technological challenges facing OEMs. System integration, interoperability, ease-of-use, and scalability have been central to my work.I have capitalized and led many successful projects, primarily in consumer and specialty educational products. My projects have been featured in a variety of technical publications. My goal is to reduce cost and improve ROI. I replace expensive hardware, such as optics, motors, and electronics, with less expensive options and some “software magic.” The result is a lower-cost, more effective, and more adaptable product. AUTOMATED DEVICES ARE MY PASSIONI have been fascinated by robots since I was very young and built my first robot when I was in middle school. It was through studying robotics I discovered making devices that did useful things in an automated way (e.g., embedded systems) was incredibly interesting. PROBLEMS I FIXMy goal is to find solutions that address difficult problems to save time. My methodology centers on listing the possible solutions to a problem and then determining which ones will yield fruit the soonest. I’ve learned that patience is an important quality needed for this work. Shining a light on the right aspects of a problem takes time, but it ultimately pays off.HOW I WORKI like to list the possible features of a product and then pick the most compelling ones, bringing clarity to the purpose of the product. I then look at the possible bill of materials and identify cost saving aspects. In this way, I get a sense for the cost of each feature. Some features are too expensive to justify. Others are too important to omit. This analysis leads to true innovation, delivering important features in a cost-effective way. MY EXTRA EDGEI feel a sense of project ownership, including the smallest details. But I also value collective knowledge. If a detail isn't being covered, I'll gather consensus or acquire outside knowledge so that the detail isn't missed. I take pride in all of my work. I am told that the software or firmware that I deliver is usually well-tested and surprisingly free of bugs.Roles I am interested in: Embedded Software Engineer, Firmware Engineer, Embedded Systems Engineer

Founder And Chief EngineerCharmed Labs 2002 - PresentI design consumer electronics for use in education. Focus on imaging and robotics. Write all firmware and application software for all projects. Design electronics and image processing algorithms. Manage manufacturers, vendors, contractors, and staff. Here are some key projects I have developed:Vizy AI CameraSimple-to-use, Raspberry Pi-based, interactive camera for AI, scientific, and computer vision applications. Web-browser accessible, programmable in Python without knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, or HTML. Hired and led engineering team, designed/developed product including several applications that leverage convolutional neural-networks (CNNs). Raised $179K initial capital through Kickstarter.•Product received a 9/10 rating from MagPi Magazine. Pixy CameraFilled market gap with low-cost, simple-to-use camera. Works with Arduino and other microcontrollers to detect objects. Raised $274K initial capital through Kickstarter. Pixy is the highest selling vision system in marketplace at >100K units sold. •Image processing at 60+ frames-per-second. •Developed code that efficiently divides processing between an ARM Cortex M0 and Cortex M4 core. •Winner of several competitions. Featured on the Ben Heck Show.VEX Vision SensorCustom contract with educational robotics OEM, Innovation First. •Wrote object detection firmware and JPEG compression code to stream video from camera to a web browser at 20 frames per second over built-in Wi-Fi controller. Telepresence Robotics Kit (TeRK) Robot Controller (Qwerk) Partnership with the Carnegie Mellon CREATE Lab. ARM-based Linux controller with an FPGA-based multi-axis motor controller.•Designed a closed-loop motor controller using Back-EMF voltage instead of encoders for motion feedback. Patent US7166980B1.Xport and Xport Botball Controller•Reverse-engineered Gameboy proprietary cartridge port to develop custom robot controller that includes FPGA-based vision system and multi-axis motor controller.
