Bartle Hall, a 4* country hotel set amidst the beautiful Lancashire countryside is locally renowned as one of the Northwest’s premiere Luxury Hotel and Wedding Venues. Starting work in November 2013 as a F&B Assistant, I was promoted in February 2014 to F&B Supervisor, working closely with management and acting as Duty Manager when required. My role further expanded; encompassing wedding management, from ceremony to evening reception and acting as Master of Ceremonies. In August 2014 I was given the permanent role of Duty Manager with a firm focus on managing weddings after success in this area over the past few months.

Melbourne, Australia

La Vita Buona is an independent wine bar and retail shop located in the heart of Melbourne CBD. Surrounded by venues such as the MCG, Melbourne Park and Regent Theatre, the bar flourishes in the evening with a variety of clientèle. Starting work primarily in the wine bar in May 2012, my role focused around the the recommendation and sale of wine to diners and take-away customers. I was also involved with the preparation of tapas, coffee and cocktails.The following month, after being recognised as a key member of staff with wide-ranging skills my role took on two more neighbouring venues owned by the same company, Caboose Canteen and 3Below. For the next five months I worked between these three individual businesses, utilising my experience in cocktails, coffee, food and most importantly customer service to better the businesses and myself.

The Lancaster Student Marketplace was a website I created for the sole purpose of giving students a place to sell their second hand goods; a so called 'virtual pin-up board' with the possibility of generating income through the sale of advertising space. I also saw it as an opportunity to gain experience alongside my business degree which included aspects of Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Finance.During its life, I wrote business plans with the 'Business Venture Group' and ran advertising campaigns both digitally and directly to students via LCD screens, emails, flyers, posters etc.I think the opportunity to forge contacts through my setup of the Marketplace, alongside using the skills I had learned in my studies such as creating accounts, business plans, marketing strategies for example were the most important things I took from this venture after leaving University.

The Best Western Glendower offers a Luxury Hotel experience, whilst also hosting a variety of events and weddings too. This was my first job position and formed the foundations for the skills I have honed today. Working on a part time basis alongside my studies, this position gave me great confidence serving customers and boosted my ability to work in a team. It was here that I began to realise how much I enjoyed working with people and also what it took to satisfy varying customer needs.

As head of the society, regular day to day operation included:Sourcing instructors and organising instructor contracts.Making sure the society ran on a tight budget, controlling costs and generating sufficient income through lessons and separate initiatives such as social events, branded society clothing and memberships.Ensuring each training session ran efficiently and preparing training plans for non-instructor sessions, personally teaching students when needed.Applying for and attaining funding for the society from the university and individual sponsors outside of the university, further using this to purchase quality equipment for use during classes in the future.Advertising and formulating marketing strategies year round to continually increase and retain a member base.Keeping direct communication between executive members at all times, organising meetings and overseeing delegated tasks.
