About Rich Ruby

As at the end of 2015, Avago Technologies (nee Agilent nee HP) sold over 12 billion FBAR filters. Each filter consists of approximately 7 to 8 miniature acoustic resonators. As an example, in the iPhone 6 and 6s (6+ 6s+) there are roughly 13 FBAR filters -- or ~ 100 miniature acoustic resonators. Each filter is hermetically sealed in a wafer-scale all-silicon package first laid out in 1999. The 'chassis' has not changed dramatically in size, shape or form since I laid out the first such devices between 1993 and 1994 (except for the addition of the wafer level package). Of course, they have become much better. The Q is higher, the uniformity and yield much more in keeping with CMOS wafers. The gradual improvement of Q (from ~400 to ~4000 today) was a project of mine (and others) from late 90's to the present. FBAR has received much attention in the financial news and has become a large driver for the stock price of Avago. Recently, Avago purchased Broadcom much of it with stock -- set by the value investors placed on Avago making the FBAR. In the last analyst's call for Fiscal 2015 almost every Analyst's first question was about FBAR. The other analysts asked about FBAR, but as a second or follow up question.Such has been the interest in FBAR that I and Avago were the target of Chinese espionage. This was brought to national news May of 2015 based the arrest of one of the Chinese participants Hao Zhang. It was Wei Pang that had worked for me from 2006 to 2009. The 32 page indictment reads like a good spy novel and can be found at http://www.justice.gov/file/439721/download.
