About Rich Schuler

My unique perspective from working as a user experience researcher, interaction designer, and developer has fostered the understanding that product design and development must be guided by the desire to solve users’ problems, fulfill their needs, and fit into and enhance their daily lives.Experienced in: Mixed-method user research; both qualitative via semi-structured interviews, focus groups, thinking-aloud usability testing and quantitative via surveys, data analysis, and statistics; many years of work using these data collection methods using scenario based design methodology to generate personas, user profiles, guide claims analysis and precedent searches, and the creation of wireframes and storyboardsIterative mobile application development (initially Windows Mobile 6 [the old brick phones]; later Android devices) and the supporting backend services guided by a user centric approach – Ability to rapidly learn, evaluate, and apply new technologies (or old ones if they fit the job) and languages to solve novel and complex problems.

  • New Jersey Institute Of Technology
    Graduate Research Assistant
New Jersey Institute Of Technology 2008 - 2018
Performed qualitative user research using diary studies, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups that concentrated on exploring how people coordinate their daily social activities, which technologies they use and why, and what difficulties and problems they encounter when doing so.Conducted iterative usability studies and user testing on social/friend-group coordination and communication applications and prototypes. Methods used included semi-structured interviews, thinking aloud protocol analysis, focus groups, and benchmarking.Developed multiple iterations of an Android application used to research novel interface designs for social group activity coordination. Designed and implemented an Openfire (Java XMPP Server) plugin that realized an XMPP protocol extension used by iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, and Web based clients.Developed an Android application that was used to test the feasibility and user experience of mobile context aware matching.Managed and mentored students as neophyte developers in backend and mobile development
  • New Jersey Institute Of Technology
    Instructor
New Jersey Institute Of Technology 2013 - 2016
User Experience Design:This course focused on guiding students through a large sampling of the user experience design process. It used the scenario based design methodology and approach to understanding user needs and goals and supporting the creation of designs to meet them. The students were guided through claims and precedent analysis, persona creation, card sorting, scenario generation, wireframes, and storyboards. These activities were iterative in nature and gradually built upon each other to the creation of a comprehensive design document.Computer, Society & Ethics:This goal of this course was to provide future technological professionals a foundation and understanding of the various ethical theories and how to apply them to various technological and social problems from the past, present, and what they may face in the future. This course challenged students to understand and think about technology not just from a business or software development perspective but from a moral perspective by exploring the various social impacts and ramifications at both the macro (societal) and micro (technological professional) level.
  • New Jersey Institute Of Technology
    Research Assistant
New Jersey Institute Of Technology 2005 - 2007
Investigated and developed a practical large scale WiFi location estimation system merging heuristics and Bayesian inference models that was accurate indoors up to 5 meters. Developed a Windows Mobile 6 application that was used to research and understand individual’s behavior during call handling decisions. Created multiple iterations of wireframes and low-fidelity mockups of mobile phone caller and receiver interfaces exploring the best way to allow callers to provide additional call information and context to the receiver so that the receiver may make better call handling decisions.Participated and conducted usability evaluation of various prototypes of the caller and receiver interfaces. Primary evaluation methods used were thinking aloud protocol analysis and task scenarios with task completion interviews.Developed and deployed a location-aware Wiki in order to investigate the ramifications of simple location-aware systems.
