Jan 2016 - Oct 2019

Software Engineer

Freelance & Contract Work

When the last start-up I was working at (Dabo Health) lost funding suddenly and without notice, I took on some freelance work. Some examples of this work (not an exhaustive list) are below:Full-stack web development (Python/Flask) for a robotic-based art project, day2day, commissioned by Autodesk. I worked directly with the artist to understand & implement their vision, which resulted in a web application that sent images selected from Instagram's API (based on geolocation and other metadata) to a machine to "draw", received those drawings and displayed them on the site. Visitors and/or administrators of the exhibit were able to interact with the site, by e.g. upvoting the images to impact the order in which they were sent to the machine.Rails development for Rocksbox, a rental subscription service for jewelry. I provided technical guidance and built a number of internal features to support the operational side of the company, e.g. improving administrative tools to identify fraud. Rails development on the Detroit Water Project - a service to help people pay their utility bills and get their water back on.

Fellow / Founder

San Francisco, Ca, Us

As a Code for America "fellow", I worked with the City of Oakland & two teammates to deliver an improved FOIA process. The result was a web application, RecordTrac, which allowed them to intake, manage & respond to public records requests in a more transparent fashion. I was responsible for the technical execution, working cross-functionally with my team (design & policy experts) & stakeholders within Oakland. In our research, we spoke with FOIA experts both inside & outside city hall, public servants who would be using the tool, multiple city departments, journalists, and others interested in a more open & transparent government. After the fellowship, I founded a company with several teammates (that was supported by Code for America's incubator), to continue to expand upon the work I did for RecordTrac. We continued to support the system for Oakland & work to make the application more easily redeployable, but ultimately found trouble gaining traction in other cities using the open source model. For some time after this, I contracted directly with the City of Oakland to support their instance of RecordTrac. I also contracted with the City of New York to advise them on launching their own version of RecordTrac (a fork of the original code) - which they still use today to manage their FOIA requests: https://a860-openrecords.nyc.gov/about

Jan 2013 - Sep 2014

Software Engineer

Full-time volunteer for the Obama reelection campaign in 2012. I started working with the San Francisco-based volunteer tech office, & ultimately joined the data team in the Chicago headquarters. Much of my work was focused on GOTV efforts & ensuring we were getting the right data out to voters & proactively identifying misinformation, e.g. polling locations & hours.
