Intellectual Property and contract development to support leading Yale researchers and disseminate knowledge. I encourage researchers and faculty at the University to explore pathways to translate their discoveries from the lab to implementation in the world. Our team assists with identifying pathways to market, forming and launching new ventures, and developing partnerships outside of the University. We bring the resources and people together to make this happen. My focus area on campus at Yale is the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) with some overlap with the Yale School of Medicine (YSM).Yale University is the 4th highest ranked University in the US according to the US News and World Report 2021. Yale has been ranked among the top 5 educational institutes for the last 5 years. Yale Ventures (formerly known as OCR) has a track record of promoting and supporting faculty by identifying valuable intellectual property assets and pursuing commercialization.

Technical team-leader of a PGM refining commercialization venture in North America. The project employs extractive pyro and hydro-metallurgical processes to recover PGMs from spent catalyst. My role was the early feasibility and technical validation of the process according to industry best practice, including pilot reactor optimization and trials to prove 99%+ PGM recovery and modeling of the heat transfer and reaction kinetics. Responsible for the development of business systems and future operating procedures for the business, including sourcing of catalyst, metals evaluation and final settlement. I advised the Board on development of a commercial business model.

Business Development Engineer for The Combustion Group (TCG), and Strategy Committee member, to identify and implement clean energy development projects. I added clean energy know-how and development targets to the existing burner management relationships, without relying heavily on government incentive schemes. Contributions included compliance, layout design and marketing of PEM electrolysers at major utility hydrogen plants, and applications mining for TCG’s TORBED pilot gasification technology, a process which converts biomass and manufacturing bi-products to cleaner fuels.

Start-up CTO and General Manager for Fer-Min-Ore Phosphate. I built the infrastrusture for the company and expanded its downstream processes and fertilizer manufacturing capability. The mine converts a low grade run of mine rock via several upgrading and acid digestion steps into a dry granular fertilizer product. Following two years of production ramp-up I completed the product quality compliance program for the business with analytical laboratories SGS Lakefield, Anglo American Research Laboratories, Bateman, Mintek and Kumba Resources.

During these years I completed a design and build phosphate processing plant and fertilizer manufacturing business in South Africa, starting with the pilot work and Bankable Feasibility Study, through start-up and two years of operation managing 60 employees. The recovery and manufacturing process was a novel process so it required a pilot campaign. I gained experience in patent law and the need to protect the design process. I supervised the selection of equipment for the process and led the project through commercialization, and also to environmental compliance with regulators DME (Department of Minerals and Energy) and NNR (National Nuclear Regulator).

Engineering assistant to the General Manager during the restructuring of three of Consol’s plastics business units, blow-molding, injection-molding, and extruded sheeting. I installed new equipment and process controls and implemented several major changes to the workflows. Consol is South Africa’s largest glass, plastic and paper packaging conglomerate.

Operator responsible for cementing oil wells on a number of exploration and production drill-rigs in the North Sea, UK. I received training in cement preparation, placement and monitoring for deep-water applications. Dowell Schlumberger is an oilfield services company based in Aberdeen, Scotland.
