Dr. Richard Gartner is Training and Supervising Analyst, faculty, and Founding Director of the Sexual Abuse Service at the White Institute, which honored him with its Director’s Award for his contributions to the psychoanalytic understanding of trauma. He has been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Division of Trauma Psychology of the American Psychological Association. The author of Betrayed as Boys: Psychodynamic Treatment of Sexually Abused Men and Beyond Betrayal: Taking Charge of Your Life after Boyhood Sexual Abuse, also edited Understanding the Sexual Betrayal of Boys and Men:The Trauma of Sexual Abuse; Healing Sexually Betrayed Men and Boys:Treatment for Sexual Abuse, Assault, and Trauma; Trauma and Countertrauma, Resilience and Counterresilience: Insights from Psychoanalysts and Trauma Experts; and Memories of Sexual Betrayal: Truth, Fantasy, Repression, and Dissociation. A founder and Past President of MaleSurvivor.org and a pioneer in treating sexually abused men, he is frequently quoted in the popular media. He was the subject of a full-length interview in the Science Section of the New York Times. He has published op eds in the New York Times, New York Newsday, and the New York Daily News.
