Dr. Bathurst (BSc., MSc., Ph.D. 1986 Queen's) is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada where he has taught since 1980. He also holds a cross-appointment with the Civil Engineering Department at Queen's University. Dr. Bathurst is Past-President of the North American Geosynthetics Society, International Geosynthetics Society, Canadian Geotechnical Society and the Engineering Institute of Canada. He has authored or co-authored more than 220 papers in refereed journals (including the journal Nature), 20 book chapters and more than 250 contributions in conference proceedings.Dr. Bathurst has made fundamental contributions to the areas of reinforcement geosynthetics, granular particle mechanics, railway ballast, transparent surrogate granular soils and numerical modelling of reinforced embankments and walls. His contributions also include themes related to earthquake geotechnical engineering, probabilistic design, instrumentation and testing of full-scale reinforced soil walls and embankments, geosynthetic materials testing and modelling, sustainability and soil-structure interaction. Dr. Bathurst is Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed technical journal Geosynthetics International, an Associate Editor of the ASCE International Journal of Geomechanics and an Associate Editor of the technical journal Geotextiles and Geomembranes.In recognition of his technical contributions he was the recipient of: 2016 Legget Medal of the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) (senior award of the CGS); 2015 Meyerhof Award (CGS); 2002 Geosynthetics Division Award; 2003 CGS Cross-Country Lecture; and the IGS Gold Medal Award (now called the IGS Technical Award) in 2023, 2010, 1998 and 1994, which is the highest technical award of the IGS. He was awarded the 2024 Julian C. Smith Medal of the EIC "For achievement in the development of Canada".In 2021 Dr. Bathurst was awarded the IGS "Bathurst Lecture" in recognition of his contributions in the area of soil reinforcement. The lecture is to be delivered by a suitably qualified expert commencing at the 12th International Conference on Geosynthetics (ICG) in Rome in September 2023, and every four years thereafter. Dr. Bathurst is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, Engineering Institute of Canada and Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, and was elected Honorary Foreign Member of the Japanese Geotechnical Society in 2019. In 2017 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada which is the highest academic award in Canada.
