I helped move IPL from a generation mix in 2007 dominated by coal and oil (86%) with no renewable energy, to a mix in 2018 where wind, solar and natural gas make up 55% of the portfolio. Built the first grid-scale energy storage system in MISO (shown in my picture above) These efforts included negotiating two wind PPA’s and a solar feed-in tariff (Indianapolis is now 4th in the country in solar PV per capita). Closed or refueled 13 coal- and oil-fired units and developed the new 671MW Eagle Valley Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Project.

I developed three major independent power projects at Reliant (now NRG Energy), and administered, managed and optimized structured power agreements. A project in Pennsylvania increased capacity by 150% but reduced emissions by over 75%. Considerable stakeholder management activity involving work with local communities, governors and other state leaders, the media, and non-governmental organizations.

At Amoco, I progressed to Vice-President, Business Development. Projects included cogeneration, natural-gas peaking and hydroelectric “firming.” Additional cogeneration projects were designed but not built, and instead resulted in lower negotiated rates with local utilities. Also prepared financial models and analysis used in the IPO or sale of non-core technologies and assets.
