Conducted research in the fundamental properties of Terfenol-D alloys along the morphotropic phase boundary. The primary goal of this research was to understand how ferromagnets and ferroelectrics differ at this low temperature structural phase boundary. Resulting analysis of the data elucidated the changing character of the phase transition with increasing temperature.Implemented design of experiments using problem solving skills producing custom configurations to obtain data for magnetic characterization, synchrotron powder diffraction, and neutron powder diffraction. Analyzed data by compiling and processing raw data with software such as Excel or Origin to facilitate the rapid interpretation of findings.Authored successful proposals for beamtime at the highly competitive Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory and the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Conducted research in the fields of Second Harmonic Generation of multifunctional materials, laser cooling, and carbon nanotubes. Constructed a circuit which takes a voltage from a photodiode and produces a feedback loop to a set of piezoelectric stack actuators in order to center a Coherent Verdi V-5 laser.Investigated carbon nanotubes using Raman Spectroscopy. Studied the broadening and tailing effect of the G-mode phonons as a function of chiral index.
