About Richard Browning

My mission is improving the quality of life in dense urban areas. Be it in terms of “horizontal” infrastructure (Honolulu Light Rail, Seattle’s Central Waterfront and SR99 Tunnel, Portland’s original bike master plan) or “vertical” buildings (offices, schools, housing, laboratories, factories, hospitals, retail stores, places of worship) – as a registered architect, urban designer and activist - I have sought to make these projects serve the humane and universal goals of firmness, utility and delight. “Quality of life” is not a static concept. It must be sustainable over time. Thus my work has always been guided by a deep sense of good stewardship toward the environment and future generations that will use and be affected by the projects I have helped to bring into being. My body of work encompasses a diverse array of project types. This polyglot career has given me the ability to look at a single project from multiple points of view. I make the designs I am involved with stronger by insuring they are clearly conceived, socially responsive and practically viable.I have worked on many broad, multidisciplinary teams and excel at organizing disparate groups of design professionals for holistic success. No complex built environment project is the result of a single person's individual vision. It is only by synthesizing the expertise and opinions of many different players – designers, stakeholders, future users and occupants – that a complex project can approach optimal realization. In the role of a designer/manager I have been granted opportunities to bring groups of these players together on a wide array of projects. I have been a catalyst for successful constructs in the urban realm. I look forward to yet more opportunities in the future to contribute to one of our greatest collective endeavors - the built environment around us.
