I spent 15 years in academia (Mathematics and Scientific Computing), and followed that with employment in private industry since 1999.My work in industry started in the area of underwater acoustics. I was responsible for a wide variety of work ranging from sonar performance modelling, synthetic aperture sonar design, digital signal processing, real-time signal processing, scientific visualization. I managed technology development projects and was actively engaged in the development work itself.Whitecap Scientific is a more recent undertaking. It is a joint venture with Dr. Sam Bromley who is a long-time collaborator. We developed real-time 3D scene reconstruction using commodity underwater video cameras used in a stereo configuration. The scene in the camera field of view is reconstructed in full 3D detail, in real-time, and available to the ROV operator and survey crew via navigable computer interface, and integrated in a digital eventing system. The technology combines concepts from interactive video, active display, and natural interface technologies.My technical focus is now back at underwater acoustics with the team at Kraken Robotics, working on various concepts and applications of synthetic aperture sonar.
