After more than 26 years of bat/wildlife surveys, since I started professionally in 1998, I have stepped back from most commercial ecological survey work in order to support fellow ecological professionals in consultancy, planning authorities, charities and national agencies to provide expert level support for complex ecological projects - especially those where bats are involved - in an advisory capacity. I do take on a small number of bat consulting projects that don't 'fit the mould' as a consultant if I can be persuaded it is something out of the ordinary (usually a castle, tunnel or church)! In 2016 I launched my new venture "Ecology on Demand" - a support service for ecologists and private clients with challenging or complex bat sites, technical or ecology business issues and training, and especially interpreting survey results, designing mitigation, and the review of reports and licence applications, as well as being 'named ecologist' for bat EPSLs. Since that time I have held EPSLs for 13 different bat species in England and Wales. I hold Bat Earned Recognition Level 3 (all annexes) for licensing in England.I am a Chartered Environmentalist specialising in bat conservation and training and have been undertaking professional wildlife surveys since 1998. I was made a Fellow of The Linnean Society of London in 2015 and have been President of Cardiff Bat Group since 2010. I was the founder and co-director of the award winning ecological consultancy Wildwood Ecology Limited from (1998 really!) 2003-2016. Having worked on bats commercially for over 26 years I am licensed to work with bats in England and Wales, including advanced skills for catching (Class 3 & 4), tracking and ringing (NRW project licences) as well as non-disturbing techniques such as video, IR and thermalimaging technology and acoustic bat detectors and analysis. I am also an active licence trainer and co-tutor of the Bat Licence Training Course for consultants – the longest running commercial bat licence training programme in the UK, and spend much of my professional time advising and overseeing high profile projects as a consultant or expert advisor, usually on protected species issues.

Uk Representative - EcologistTitley Scientific Uk Ltd Mar 2010 - Oct 2012Cardiff, United KingdomAlongside my role with Wildwood Ecology I supported the UK/Europe Customer Service Team and product development and marketing teams in Australia with industry insight. This was a sales commission role that went far beyond a typical sales-based function. As the only technical team member in Europe, I championed the development of the -at that time- leading Anabat detection system through innovation and research, and contributed heavily to the design of new devices, especially the Anabat Express passive bat detector; I presented the original concept and core functionality for this simple passive recording unit at a design workshop in Brisbane, Australia). EU Sales in the during my contract were in excess of £1.2M.When the Australian parent company went into administration in 2012, Wildwood Ecology took over the service & repair centre by hiring the technician for around 14 months in order to ensure the European customers could still access routine servicing and repairs. We handed this over to the new owner who re-established both parent and UK based companies, and continue to collaborate informally on new product and software development as beta tester. -
