I study biologic applications to human health. As a child I was constantly curious about the world around me. I loved working with my dad in the yard because I was able to see first-hand the changes in the world with each new season. At times, my curiosity led to heartache such as when I tested gravity on my mother’s favorite vase or my own rocking chair. My childhood curiosity has only gotten stronger as I have channeled it into a career of scientific research. I love the variety of biomedical research that I have been able to do from the microbiology of the plague bacteria infection in the flea, to the biochemistry defining the mechanism of quiescence in cancer cells, to assembling the puzzle of proteins involved in cell sheet morphogenesis. More recently in my research on regenerative tissue products I developed a cryopreserved skin regenerative product and collaborated with manufacturing to make it available to patients in need.I am constantly looking for ways to optimize workflow to increase productivity. As a graduate student, I optimized use of our confocal microscope utilizing 6 undergraduate researchers working nights and weekends. When I am not at the bench, you can find me applying my scientific research experience to gardening, cooking and raising my children. When asked what I grow, I enjoy the surprised looks as I list off the 20+ vegetables I grow each year.Planning and experimental design are key at the start of any successful project. My years of experience practicing these skills and following projects to completion allow me to work effectively and efficiently to fulfill the needs of any biomedical company, whether in research or production.

Graduate Student ResearcherDuke University Aug 2011 - Jan 2018Durham, North Carolina, United States-Studied the mechanisms of cell sheet morphogenesis as a model for epithelial wound healing and neural/pallet tube closure using the process of dorsal closure in the Drosophila embryo. -Used genetic crosses and time-lapse confocal microscopy, to screen a set of 102 fly lines, each consisting of large deletions on the 2nd chromosome for defects in dorsal closure to Identify the genes involved. (Identified regions with phenotypes will lead to a minimum of 46 novel genes involved in dorsal closure.)-Trained and supervised six undergraduate research assistants to work on all aspects of the screen. -
