Dr. Thomas directs the programs of INTERCET, Ltd. Previously he was Director of Human Toxicology and Risk Assessment at the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council (NAS/NRC). His research interests concern the mechanisms of toxic action of chemicals and the related ultra-structural changes in tissues. He directed studies at NAS for twelve years on the testing of complex mixtures, the assessment of contaminants in drinking water, the use of pharmacokinetics in risk assessment, the recommendation of acceptable levels of chemical exposure for military and NASA personnel, and the development of new methods for risk assessment. He has directed toxicologic studies at Borriston Laboratories, the MITRE Corporation, SRI International, and CIBA-GEIGY Corporation. He has chaired or served on several committees dealing with the review and validation of toxicity studies, the development of new test protocols, and the emergency response to chemical accidents. He served on the Centers for Disease Control Committee on Acceptable Exposures to Chemical Warfare Agents, the Emergency Response Planning Committee of American Industrial Hygiene Association, and the U.S. Federal Interagency Committee on Acute Emergency Toxicity Planning. Besides his involvement in national scientific programs, he has had wide international experience in 26 countries directing programs on toxicity testing, emergency response planning, standard setting, and regulatory affairs including work with the United Nations, U.S. Agency for International Development, the World Health Organization, and the World Bank.
