About Richard Davies

I have been in the storytelling business since 1990. First in journalism, where I learned skills that are still fundamental to my work today, and then public relations (in-house and agency). I began working in digital content marketing in 2005.My career began on a weekly sports newspaper in the UK called First Down, which covered American football in the days before the Internet. I climbed the ladder to editor-in-chief and also worked on publications covering basketball, tennis and food. I learned many skills during these six years that still benefit my work today, especially the importance of a good story. In 1996, I joined the NFL as PR Director of its London Monarchs team, who played in a European league. The next two years were a whirlwind of TV appearances, radio interviews, photo-shoots and community work as we promoted the sport in the UK until the NFL decided to shut down the team. After a stint in freelance journalism, I joined a PR consultancy in Oxford called Lefevre Communications as a media relations specialist. During the next five years, I worked on more than 50 accounts including Dixons, Currys, MoneyGram, British Telecom, Oxfam, NatWest Insurance, Corus Hotels, Dulux and Eton Group Hotels. In 2005, I moved to Canada and joined AbeBooks.com as its PR manager. Located in Victoria, British Columbia, AbeBooks is an online marketplace for new, used and rare books. In 2008, my professional life took another turn when AbeBooks was acquired by Amazon.Over the years at AbeBooks, my role expanded to include digital content, on-site and email merchandising, social media, video, podcasting and B2B communications. I spent 18 years using stories to sell books and learned much about used and antiquarian bookselling. In February 2023, I left AbeBooks to look for new adventures.

Initially, I arrived as a traditional PR manager but that role soon evolved into an online marketing position with a major focus on digital content and communications. I have witnessed many social and business changes from inside an ecommerce business. When I joined AbeBooks, Facebook was less than a year old and smart phone technology was still under development. Today, my social media work is spread across Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. My content is delivered via websites, email and paid channels. I have produced a podcast for AbeBooks since 2018, interviewing authors, booksellers, and librarians.I've managed AbeBooks' voice since 2005 and worked alongside every part of the company in my role. Traditional PR functions including press releases, spokesperson duties, pitching and media relations, and crisis management have been part of my role since 2005. Since 2018, I also provided communications for multiple internal campaigns for AbeBooks' network of sellers, ranging from compliance to change management.Being part of Amazon is an education in itself. When I arrived in 2005, I was a reader who knew a little about books and bookselling. Today, I have a broad knowledge of the new and used bookselling businesses, and also the world of rare and collectible bookselling. Not many people can say they have helped sell a book worth $20,000.
  • Lefevre Communications
    Pr Consultant/Director
    Lefevre Communications Jun 1999 - Dec 2004
    Oxford, United Kingdom
I joined this Oxford-based company unsure whether agency life would suit me. It was a revelation. I was hired as a media relations specialist to work alongside all the account managers and assist on every single account. My goal was to bring journalistic standards to the agency's PR work in terms of story development, copy-writing and pitching to the media.Although I did not keep count, I estimate I worked on more than 50 accounts and was promoted to director in 2001. The broad range of clients meant I covered consumer, B2B, technology and telecoms, and dotcoms. Most days I was either pitching or advising colleagues on pitching. This was an extremely creative period as we were often developing stories for clients who lacked stories.Clients included BT, NatWest, Abbey National, Dulux Paints, Akzo Nobel Paints, MoneyGram, Pertemps Recruitment, Dixons, Corus Hotels, and Oxfam.
  • National Football League (Nfl Europe)
    Pr Director At London/England Monarchs
National Football League (Nfl Europe) Aug 1996 - Jul 1998
    London, United Kingdom
I was headhunted from my position at First Down newspaper to join the NFL's franchise in London, then part of the NFL Europe league. The team - along with other franchises in places like Amsterdam, Barcelona and Frankfurt - was designed to help bring American football to a European audience. The 1996 season was played at Crystal Palace while the 1997 campaign was played at a variety of venues with the team branded as the England Monarchs. My goal was simply to win media exposure for the team and help introduce the sport to as many people as possible. I had 35 players and 15 cheerleaders at my disposal. The newspaper sport sections gave us little coverage so we expanded broadly into other media, ranging from radio to TV and even a commercial for British Airways. This was my first exposure to corporate PR and I learned on the fly, making many mistakes along the way. My exposure to the broadcast industry was particularly insightful. After two seasons, the NFL shut down the team due to the poor attendances.
  • First Down Newspaper (Mediawatch Ltd)
    Journalist (Editor In Chief)
First Down Newspaper (Mediawatch Ltd) Sep 1990 - Sep 1995
    Oxford, United Kingdom
Although I had spent 11 months with a sports advertising agency after college, this is where my career began. I started as a 22-year-old staff writer on a weekly newspaper dedicated to US football and worked my way up until I was editor-in-chief of the entire media group, which published two weekly newspapers and three glossy monthly magazines.I learned how to write, interview, edit and design. I was taught the basics of journalism by Fleet Street professionals who also contributed to our newspaper. We worked long hours with a small team but it was memorable work. Even my job interview was memorable as it was concluded in the local pub. It was here that I learned what makes a good story and the importance of being concise and never missing a deadline.During my first 12 months, the business transitioned from "hot metal" and "over matter" to digital production with QuarkXpress and images provided via a dial-up modem.Gradually, I worked my way up the ladder until I was running the small team - my first experience of people management.
