Senior Learning Developer (Secondment)The Open University Feb 2022 - PresentMilton Keynes, England, United KingdomDeveloped an ‘ExpertTrack’ suite of three short courses on social care and a microcredential on palliative care for the third-party FutureLearn platform. The sale of FutureLearn meant the team’s priorities, pipeline and platform was revised; as one of only four in a team of 22 familiar with oXygen, Moodle and the OU VLE, I co-led on upskilling colleagues, defining and documenting new workflows and templates, giving team training demonstrations and one-to-one advice, and contributing to the creation of 50+ guidance documents. Led on migrating five ‘ExpertTrack’ short courses and three microcredentials from FutureLearn to the OU VLE.Co-led on GenAI short course pilot using a bespoke in-house AI generating module material and Microsoft Copilot to explore time and cost efficiencies in production.Line-managed (at various times) six production assistants and editors. -
Digital Development EditorThe Open University Dec 2005 - Feb 2022Milton Keynes, England, United KingdomLead editor and managed day-to-day production on several large-scale, high-profile projects: Fleming Fund (25 modules); FCO Diplomatic Academy (seven in-house training courses for FCO staff worldwide, plus a public course on FutureLearn); OpenWASH (six modules of distance education and training in water, sanitation and hygiene for the Ethiopian government, plus a handbook); and TESS-India (125 short units in a major UK government-funded project to improve teaching in India, plus various related learning materials). Engaging with academic colleagues, offering expertise and considerable experience on remodelling and adapting learning materials into online frameworks, embracing interactivity on the platforms, and encouraging creative learning. All engagements consider best practice, budget, schedule and quality. Most of the projects I worked on were for the OpenLearn Create platform on the OU VLE, but in this time I also had experience of building courses on FutureLearn, Rise 360 and the Allama Iqbal Open University’s Moodle VLE. Tailored text and its structure to very different audiences in both print and online, including but not limited to professionals doing CPD courses, casual learners, mature students returning to education, refugees and asylum seekers in Glasgow, and US college students.Briefed in-house staff and freelancers on editorial requirements and design of graphic/interactive elements.Designed templates and guidelines for projects, to be used by the client and in the production team.Mentored new team members and line-managed two team members.Achieved APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ), June 2019. Quick to learn new software, often with minimal training: examples include XML software and Moodle quizzes, adapting and updating interactive HTML5 assets, Storyline 360, as well as bespoke in-house systems. -
