Research Manager with 15+ years hands-on experience as a scientist in academia and industry through the development life-cycle from idea to commercialisation. A strong multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving working across teams to resolve complex problems that require complete system understanding. Past decade in academia translating my experience to help support academics develop projects that create social and technological change. Previously held the post leading both the central Research Support & Business Partnerships teams, prior to moving into the School of Archaeological and Forensic Sciences as a closer faculty BDM support role. Experience in developing partnerships, supporting knowledge exchange (KE) and project and financial management in grant (EU, Research Council, Charity) and commercial funded projects. Currently line manage a technical team of 5 delivering KE projects.

Responsible for the ongoing management and monitoring exercise.• Championed a £20m Cultural Heritage Hub bid and coordinated the due-diligence, budgets, scope of work, and required letters from over 25 co-applicant research organisations and 22 project partners. This included creating User Requirement and Design Inputs, SOPs, Manufacturing Batch Records, Supplier and Raw Material Specifications, QC/Certificate of Analysis. This enabled biocompatibility trials to ISO10993 as a precursor to first in-man studies. Within one year the team undertook the first biocompatibility study. -

Senior Development Scientist & Interim Manager Of DevelopmentMicrovisk Limited Nov 2010 - Jul 2013St Asaph Business Park, Denbighshire• CE Marking of the world’s first medical disposable MEMS strip for PT-INR measurements based on the development of an integrated polymer micro fluid-probe undertaken on my Doctorate. A key achievement was re-designing the microsensor to improve signal-to-noise (US8297110) leading to a successful evaluation at The Royal London Hospital to leverage Series A investment of £1.025m.• Interim Management (Sep’12 to Jul’13) in IVD Development of a PT-INR product. As manager I introduced control of experimental design and tracking of metrics. Within 4-months the team was able to bring the product to meet performance requirements.• Personally undertook investigations leading to significant reduction in imprecision (%CV) of a PT-INR assay from >15% towards 5%. Demonstrated the importance of sample interaction with dried reagent which led to IP on a monolithic sensor design (GB2499428) and deposition process improvement. Showed that improvements to the detection algorithm could further reduce imprecision up to 5%.• Co-author of 5 granted patent families with identification of inventive developments, reduction to practice, writing the application, and responding to the examination process. The generation of a strong IP portfolio for the company.• Investigation of dried reagent location, volume, coverage, method of deposition, drying and established understanding of clinical results with regards to formulation, solubility, sample volume, and portability. Additionally took responsibility for shelf life studies.• Established leak-test specification of packaging through an analytical model leading to optimisation of sealing temperature. Improved Polymerised Acrylic Acid plasma process for stable (+12m) hydrophilic coatings.• Developed instrumentation QC techniques to show accurate heating of temperature controller, and variability of front-end electronics that led to clustering of clinical results.

Senior Research Scientist (Polymer Mnt)Stfc Oct 2008 - Nov 2010Harwell, Oxfordshire• Senior Scientist in the Central Microstructure Facility specifically in areas of polymer based microsensors for bioscience applications. Project Management and technical delivery for STFC in EU FP6 Project PRONANO to deliver a polymer based route for parallel probe arrays for metrology. The project involved planning and accounting of a significant budget (5 years €1.1m), coordination of research in a small team to deliver project goals, and elaboration of e-learning web courses for the dissemination and education work package. Upon undertaking the project I negotiated to subcontract a major fabrication task that had slipped by several months whilst working towards parallel deliverables. The decision reduced project costs, guaranteed quality, and eliminated the project delays. • Received proof of concept funding (£10k) for demonstration of a sensor for liver diagnostics at St Mary’s Hospital; CLASP research grant as co-applicant with University of Cambridge (£320k) for a polymer based chemical “artificial nose”; undertook a design project for Shimadzu Corporation for a MEMS actuator with positive feedback; recipient of internal funding (£20k) to outfit a MEMS test/demonstration area and fabricate polymer MEMS cantilevers.• Industrial Supervisor of an Engineering Doctorate student on “Microcantilever Biosensors”, who successfully graduated in 2014. • Received a letter of “outstanding future potential” under my professional review.
