I am originally from Los Angeles, CA. where I received a B.A. in Economics from UCLA, then an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Louisiana State University (LSU). I am an global scholar/educator, specializing in technology, inequality, social & health risk and public policy. Over the past decade, I have conducted multi-method field research in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Europe and in the USA. In addition, I have published articles on STS & development and new media in multiple peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, as well as produced academic documentaries on this topic. My research primarily addressed how new media technologies like Internet, mobile phones and digital video have impacted global divides in terms of knowledge work, professional networks and identity. My research has also uncovered the paradoxical relationship between Global Aid in the Internet era, especially ICT4D initiatives, with the detrimental phenomenon of Digital Brain Drain. While this dynamic has impacted across disciplines, in the last decade it has been markedly associated with the increase of out-migration among health professionals from the global south to the advanced nations of the north. More recently, my interest in technology and risk has shifted from the global to the local. I have been working with colleagues to investigate the phenomenon of active shooters, and in general violence in the work place. We ask: is it possible to leverage emerging integrated technologies to predict and perhaps prevent these tragic events? We just published a couple of articles in key journals that we hope will contribute to this under-researched area. In addition, recently I collaborated with United Way on a grassroots initiative aimed at reducing the intersectional obstacles responsible for inter-generational, minority poverty. This applied policy project has led to important conference presentations and published and submitted articles on how addressing intergenerational, minority poverty can meaningfully address both Black Lives Matter concerns and COVID-19 risk among the most vulnerable people in society. Finally, I'm writing a book series on my academic adventures, entitled "Scientist Accidental". Combining professional and personal narratives, this series synthesizes key STS, Global Development, Organizational and Ethnic studies literatures with an historical review of post Cold War socio-political trends. The series also addresses the troubling intersection of diversity, student achievement and institutional sustainability in higher education today.
