My name is Richard Edwards. I’m a first-generation Asian American whose family immigrated from Cambodia. You don’t often see many Khmer people in the tech world, but here I am. How did I get here? Was it pure coincidence? I’m not sure. All I know is that I was born in a small-ish place in San Diego, and I had no guide to help me navigate the realm of tech.My fascination with technology began to widen during high school. Ironically, it was a great game called League of Legends that made me question the art of real-time multiplayer functionality. While that wasn’t the sole reason I chose Computer Science, it definitely pointed me in that direction. As for why I’m doing this? I’m not entirely sure. I just love exploring the unknown. During high school, I came out to both my parents as bisexual, and during that time, most of my connections were cut off, leaving me with almost none. So, during college application season, I found myself alone. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in life. While I may not always know what I’m doing, I can say for certain that I love what I’ve done. Whether it’s tackling assignments that seemed impossible or diving into endless personal projects for my friends, each experience has shaped me.If it’s fate or merely coincidence, I’ve grown from being a homeless, anti-social, close-minded individual in high school into someone who is secure, social, and open-minded. Now, I’m eager to embark on a career change because I truly love academia. I want to see greater diversity in higher education!
