Software development teams often struggle to connect their day-to-day work with the things their businesses and customers want. As an experienced Product Manager, I identify and make those connections explicit, so I can organise my team around product outcomes that have the highest leverage. This helps me create cross-functional alignment and empower smart people to focus on and solve the right problems. As I’ve matured as a PM, I’ve come to think that Product Management might more accurately be understood as Product Success. This framing helps me account for non-development activities like frequent data analysis, measuring outcomes, go-to-market planning, positioning, sales and support enablement and the myriad of other factors that go into creating and maintaining successful products. In my spare time, I’m an avid golfer, a successful language learner and an ever-more-confident DIYer. A Product Management mindset has helped me improve in all of these areas: tempering my fear of failure; helping me analyse performance and identify opportunities for improvement; and teaching me how to experiment towards better outcomes.
