Richard Hellman began his medical career in academic medicine, and then went into the private sector, founding and directing an innovative diabetes center in Kansas City. In 1997, the journal Diabetes Care published, as a lead cover article, the results of 15 years of his data, which showed that an intensified approach to diabetes care lowered death rates and kidney failure rates. The article has been widely cited world-wide. He has continued to direct and care for patients in an independent practice setting with an experienced multi-disciplinary team.He received his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School, and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and a Distinguished Alumnus of the Medical School. He did his post-graduate work at KUMC, and thereafter joined the faculty of the UMKC School of Medicine where he was an Associate Professor of Medicine, and currently is a Clinical Professor of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology.Dr. Hellman has had leadership positions in many organizations, including Past President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and currently Vice Chair of the PCPI, an umbrella organization convened by the AMA. The PCPI has produced most of the performance measures used by Medicare. He has been an invited speaker world-wide on numerous topics, most recently including: Patient Safety; Drug and Medical Device Safety; Improving Diabetes Outcomes; Diabetes, Cognitive Dysfunction and Depression; and Inpatient Diabetes Care. He has been an invited speaker 3 times at the AMA leadership annual conferences, most recently in Washington DC in 2016. He has published numerous articles and several book chapters. He was recently appointed to the Editorial Board of Diabetes Care, and was named by the Editors of Diabetes Care as one of the Distinguished Reviewers for 2014, 2015, and 2016, listed at the top of the list in 2016.He lives at home with his wife. He has two daughters and two grandsons, who he spoils unconscionably, and he tries to keep in close touch with his family, his close friends, and his ever-expanding network of friends and colleagues world-wide.
