I graduated from University College London in 1970 with a First Class BSc (Honours) Degree in Geography and was awarded the Science Faculty Silver Medal and the Dora Belasco Prize in Meteorology. I gained a PhD at University College London in 1973. After spending a short while teaching at Haberdashers’ Aske’s School, Elstree, I was appointed as a Lecturer in Geography at Manchester in 1975, eventually becoming a Senior Lecturer and then Reader, and retiring (early) at the end of September 2011, since when I've been an Honorary Fellow and taught a third-year course on biogeography. I am now an Honorary Research Fellow, During my career, I've written around twenty academic books, the latest of which – a fifth edition of Fundamentals of Geomorphology co-authored with Emma Shuttleworth – appeared at the start of the year.
