About Richard Kipling
Before I assumed a fundraising role for the Center for Health Reporting, I led the Center and its 6 professional journalists as Editor in Chief for three years. I have held leadership positions in a number of editorial operations over the past 25 years. I've managed news staffs of 50, kept administrative herd on a staff of 150 professionals, led news projects, been part of countless paperwide teams. I'm known as a people person, someone to entrust with delicate, difficult situations, and someone who prioritizes and gets things done. I'm a teambuilder and contributor, and have worked successfully with a diverse array of people -- all ethnic groups, all ages, all levels. An often-praised quality is an ability to work with young people, to gain their trust, champion their cause, develop them and get the best out of them. I hope to continue to work with young students or journalists. I also hope to continue to advance the cause of diversity, whether in a newsroom, classroom or other organizational setting.
Listed skills include Journalism, Copy Editing, Storytelling, Newspapers, and 15 others.

Journalism Instructor
Journalism Instructor
I've taught journalism-related courses to undergraduates for the past two decades at the above institutions. The goal is to teach students to observe, to always be curious, to be fair and to write with clarity and precision. I also voice enthusiasm for stabs at creativity, and encourage risk-taking in subject and approach. My student class evaluations are through the roof.
Executive Director/Senior Editor
Fundraising, communication with current funders and media partners, story concept formation and editing.
Managing Editor
As Managing Editor I directed much of the work of the Center's reporters and worked with project partners -- other media organizations -- to produce in-depth health policy stories.
Editor-In-Chief, Chcf Center For Health Reporting
I head the California HealthCare Foundation Center for Health Reporting, which employs 7 experienced journalists to work with newsrooms and NPR affiliates across California to produce in-depth stories about health care policy issues. The Center, based at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, has produced more than 100 projects for more than 40 California papers and NPR stations. Its work has won several awards and its "Ask Emily" column, by Senior Writer Emily Bazar, is published regularly by 25 California news media organizations.
Editor, Center For California Health Care Journalism
The Center for California Health Care Journalism is an independent organization devoted to reporting on health care issues that concern Californians. Associated with the Annenberg School of Journalism at USC, the Center -- a pilot project funded by the California HealthCare Foundation -- typically partners with small and medium-sized California newspapers to produce projects of interest to their communities that the papers would be unable to accomplish on their own. The Center co-produced projects in Fresno, Merced, Santa Cruz and at the North County Times.
Administrative Editor/Metro
I was in charge of all administrative aspects -- budget, evaluations, expenses, bureaus, scheduling, recruitment for a staff of 180 journalists. I also was weekend on-duty Metro editor and in charge of the section's young talent, 11 reporters.
Editor, Orange County Edition, Los Angeles Times
I headed a staff of 29 reporters, 8 editors plus full complement of photo, business and copy editing staffs. Our charge was to compete successfully against the Orange County Register, which had three times the reporting complement. We were more than successful.
Metpro Director
For 8+ years I headed and expanded the newspaper industry's leading newsroom diversity program. The two-year program included a year-long curriculum at the LA Times, with classroom instruction and newsroom beat rotations and constant evaluations of the 12 trainees, all of which I managed. Each trainee's second year was spent as a working reporter at one of the seven Times Mirror papers (LA Times, Newsday, Baltimore Sun, Hartford Courant, Allentown Morning Call, Stamford Advocate and Greenwich Time). I was in charge of their progress at these sites. If that progress was successful, the trainee was offered a full-time job at that paper. Of the 200+ graduates of the program, more than a dozen took part in Pulitzer Prize-winning efforts, another dozen served as foreign correspondents at the nation's largest newspapers and a host became reporters at major metropolitan dailies across the country. The program produced reporters and photographers. A sister program run out of Newsday on Long Island produced a bevy of copy editors. In the late 1990s, I was also a player in the development of Metpro.Biz, an attempt to diversify middle management and executive positions at Times Mirror's newspapers.
