Dr. Richard Kissel is Chief Program Officer at The DoSeum, where he oversees guest experience, educational programming, and special events for San Antonio's only museum dedicated to early learners. He also serves as an instructor and course developer for the online Museum Studies graduate program at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to his current work, Richard served as the Director of Public Programs at Yale's Peabody Museum, where he led public education, guest experience, special events, and the development, design, and production of exhibitions. From 2008-2013 he served as Director of Teacher Programs at the Paleontological Research Institution and, from 2003-2008, as Science Program Specialist at The Field Museum, where he also served as the primary scientific advisor for Evolving Planet--the museum's permanent, 27,000-square-foot exhibition on life's history.With an academic background in Earth and biological sciences, Richard has traveled extensively to excavate and study the fossil remains of ancient amphibians, dinosaurs and other reptiles, and the ancient relatives of mammals. In addition to scientific publications, he has authored popular articles on paleontology, museum education, and the nature of science. Richard also coauthored "Evolving Planet" for Abrams Books for Young Readers and "Dinosaurs and Dioramas; Creating Natural History Exhibitions" for Routledge; he coedited "Samurai and the Culture of Japan's Great Peace" and "Exploration & Discovery: Treasures of the Peabody Museum" for Yale University Press. Richard is a featured scientist online at NOVA's scienceNOW, serves as a scientific consultant for NOVA/BBC programming, and was a featured speaker at the 2016 TEDxYale conference.Richard is deeply interested in: constructivist and inquiry-based approaches to STEM education; exhibition development and design; the role of museums within society; and the history and nature of science. He also cartoons and creates on a nightly basis for our secret treehouse.
