In my most recent role, I oversaw delivery of outstanding network support, customer service, technical troubleshooting, and field support through in-person and telephone communications. I assessed, diagnosed, and analyzed isolated and systemic issues to develop effective and innovative solutions. I solved problems in escalated customer situations, strategically planned and led solution implementation, and managed customer follow-up. I managed technical teams, liaised with customers, and managed multiple concurrent projects. I also ensured compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLAs).Moreover, I successfully led completion of a major enterprise-class system installation series, including comprehensive technical troubleshooting, effective team leadership, and outstanding customer service. I was specially recruited as a dedicated on-site support team member at HPES/EDS in charge of support for all Sun/Sun-branded HDS systems and vendor equipment. I consistently met or exceeded metric goals while delivering outstanding customer service.

At Sun Microsystems, I analyzed and diagnosed issues as a UNIX generalist delivering system support and ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction. I developed comprehensive work and solution plans, liaised with customers and cross-functional team members, and drafted reports and detailed documentation. I drove pre- and post-installation support for data center class computing and storage systems.

Reporting to the Chief Information Officer of the University, I direct the Department of Technical Services, which is responsible for the installation, configuration, operation and maintenance of all computing and communication technology on campus, except for application software. Technical Services consists of Systems and Operations, which handles the mainframe operations, Telecommunications, which is responsible for both voice and data communication, and Computer Repair. In this role, I direct the Technical Services department daily, including budget management, short-term and long-term planning, vendor and client negotiations and other typical managerial duties. I am responsible for the specification or validation of any new computing and/or communication hardware and/or communication technology to be installed at the university. In addition, I function as the data network manager for the extensive multi-vendor, multi-protocol internetwork installed at the university. In this role, I engineer modifications and additions to the network, specify and purchase equipment, install or direct installation, configure and operate a wide array of network devices, including routers, gateways, bridges, repeaters, hubs, concentrators and so on. Experienced on a variety of physical media, including copper twisted pair, coaxial cable and optical fiber. Low level media access protocol experience includes ethernet, AppleTalk and RS-232 and V.35 serial. Higher level protocol experience includes TCP/IP, DECNET, Novell IPX, and AppleTalk. I also operate the primary name server for our domain, as well as a secondary server for several other domains. I am the technical contact for our Internet domain and manage our connection to the Internet. .

Responsible for the installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of all telecommunication systems on campus, including both voice and data systems. I direct operation of all phases of telecommunications on campus, including configuration of the AT&T System 85 and G3r telephone switches and associated peripherals, administrative programs such as billing and long-distance resale, and service negotiation.

Responsible for design, installation, configuration and operation of campus-wide internetwork. This included vendor/equipment qualification, service specification and negotiation, and day-to-day network operation and maintenance. The network was implemented as a multi-vendor, multi-protocol internetwork. Connectivity was achieved via a variety of strategies, with support for AppleTalk, DECNET, Novell and TCP/IP over a variety of physical media including copper twisted pair, coaxial cable and optical fiber. Experience installing, configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting multiprotocol routers and gateways (Cisco, Proteon, FastPath, GatorBox), bridges, intelligent hubs and other active network devices. Managed growth of network across campus, and accomplished end-user connections, including installation and configuration of TCP/IP software for UNIX, MS-DOS and Macintosh platforms (NCSA Telnet, PC/TCP, VersaTerm, etc), DEC PathWorks, Novell, AppleTalk and serial connections. Wrote technical and user documentation. Also acted as the system administrator of a Sun server and several diskless clients, with about 300 registered users, and in addition I configured or aided in the configuration of all networked machines on campus. Configured services include NFS, DNS, NNTP, NTP, FTP, SNMP, "R" commands, and others. Experience using devices such as the Sniffer and operating system tools for network troubleshooting and protocol analysis.

Functioned in a dual role as both system administrator for the Math / Computer Science computers and as general network specialist for the College of Engineering and Applied Science. Computer systems administered included Sun 3/160's, Sun 3/50's, DEC MicroVAX II, and various IBM PC/AT type machines. Operating systems used are SunOS, Xenix and Ultrix. Network responsibilities include maintenance of the physical equipment, including bridges and routers, ethernet hardware, and network interface devices, as well as campus mail forwarding, domain name service, and the university Internet connection. Additionally, I was heavily involved in the design effort to expand the university networking capabilities.

Assisted the Geoscience Department with the maintenance and administration of their Sun 3/280 and 3/50 machines and the network. Wrote several local utilities and authored programs to translate seismic data in various formats and to plot seismic data on the 3/50s using Suntools. Gained additional experience in interactive graphics programming, Sun system installation, modification, maintenance and TCP/IP-based network administration.

Responsible for the translation of "LabelMaster", a store shelf label generation product originally written in COBOL to run under MS-DOS, to the “C” language intended to run on a UNIX platform, with portability a major concern. Development under UNIX on an NCR Tower. I wrote over 25,000 lines of C code in six months for this project. Environment includes ISAM file management, screen management (using curses) and laser printer control. Gained familiarity with PostScript. Performed some maintenance on the COBOL application. Also was system administrator of the Tower, and as such was responsible for system maintenance, kernel tuning, user administration and the like.

Responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of "PEP", a petroleum Property Evaluation Program written in C and developed in a DOS environment. Gained experience writing C programs in a production environment. Coding experience includes ISAM file storage and retrieval, windows, interactive graphics (with GSS), financial calculations, and general operating system utilities. Became familiar with a wide variety of IBM PC and PC compatible machines and associated hardware.

Responsible for distribution of all software products. Also functioned as the resident systems programmer, with responsibility for installation, configuration, support and user interface utilities, and for in-house support utilities and call-tracking systems. Functioned as system administrator for most of the UNIX systems in house. Worked on development of a semi-automatic distribution administration system that would function over a multiple machine network. Other accomplishments include a menu-driven system administration package for non-computer-oriented customers. Experience with Oasis, UNIX, and MS/DOS operating systems, and the languages C, Forth, BASIC, and UNIX shell script, both c-shell and Bourne. Also have some knowledge of several versions of assembly language, LISP, FORTRAN, Pascal and COBOL.

Responsible for Customer support both by voice and by dial-up data lines. Types of support include providing answers to questions about ProfitKey's Manufacturing, Job Control and Financial software, and providing a wide range of operating system support for both UNIX and DOS systems. Gained experience using UNIX on a variety of microcomputers, including Altos, IBM, NCR, Sperry and Zilog machines. Responsible for development and implementation of a menu-driven system administrator package designed to aid the unexperienced UNIX system owner in maintaining a healthy system. Gained experience in developing software in the UNIX environment using the Bourne shell and C language, mostly for use in solving support and implementation problems. Also gained some experience using the Unify database management system and developing tools for database access.
