With a background in languages, law and project management, since 2012, Richard Mason has headed the EC permanent representation at IMO and has been responsible for IMO liaison and coordination of EU positions at IMO on all issues - maritime safety, security, and environmental protection, as well as focussing on policy development. GHG emission reduction continues to be a prominent environmental issue and the EC is concerned to ensure an ambitious global response. With that in mind, Richard has been actively involved in the initial EC funding and progress in the €10m IMO-managed Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre Network, with five regional centres throughout the world. He has successfully argued for a Phase 2 in 2023 comprising a further €10m for technology transfer and energy efficiency pilot projects, as well as two new regional safety projects in South-East Asia in 2024.Now he continues as a consultant, focussing on maritime development aid.
