About Richard Mathis

At times, companies can benefit from a fresh approach to problem solution or use some help in an area that they do not plan upon staffing permanently. I fill that need and have been effective before in this role both domestically and overseas. I have been very effective in the past in identifying solutions to problems, some of which had been puzzling companies for some time. I have been able to rearrange personnel schedules, describe fresh approaches and re-assign duties to solve problems. In numerous instances I have been introduced to problems and re-designed approaches to an entire project or product. Additional features may be added to products in the design stage and not activated until needed, thus giving a competitive advantage that was not immediately obvious even to competition. While much of my experience has been in the casino gaming field and design and fielding of associated products, I am comfortable in working in many fields—I have yet to find a situation in which I cannot profitably draw upon some past experience.I typically have a non-confrontational approach to projects, attempting to learn from the personnel who are most currently performing the tasks. Subsequently, I can make suggestions and possibly streamline things. I can act as an engineering designer, design firmware routines (in C or in Assembly Language), draw schematics, route, load and troubleshoot printed circuit boards. I have designed mechanical packaging for products and also have worked with designers for shipping products. I can aid in patent research and research of legal precedent, also. I have worked within and out of the U.S. so I understand some situations that are not obvious to someone who has worked entirely domestically. Examples are working with device physicists in nuclear device tests at Lawrence Livermore Labs and at sea with General Dynamics in the National Data Buoy Program.

Interfaced with State regulators. • Engineered and designed a bar-top slot in accordance with Pat 7,192,346. All security, game control and peripheral control features in a custom board designed in-house based on PIC32. Wrote firmware in C. Linux used as OS for video engine. • Game extremely economical to produce and had advanced security features.• Some games were formally approved by Eclipse Compliance Testing for use in Oklahoma. Eclipse certified game as being in compliance with U.S. Pat. 7,192,346.• Sample games developed on this platform may be seen at: http://www.pi-tronix.com/gallery.htm Or GoTo: http://www.google.com//#q=site:pi-tronix.com&, Then select Video Clips of Games. 15 August 2013 ceased development of skill slot.• Developed a robust identity/ loyalty card application for a slot which employed a contactless MIFARE card. Spintek International Sep 1993 - Mar 1995
    Reno, Nevada Area
Spintek International, Inc.2 years• Devised and patented, with another engineer, a considerably simpler approach than IGT virtual reel pay method to avoid conflict with IGT patent and allow very large jackpots to be awarded upon a spinning reel slot machine (U.S. Pat. 5,380,008). • Negotiated with investor and formed new company, Spintek, to develop, manufacture, and market slot machines to exploit aforesaid patent.• Worked with and directed mechanical engineer to design and manufacture a sheet metal spinning reel slot cabinet. Oversaw production of design for prototype.• Designed, engineered and produced a distributed architecture control unit for Spintek spinning reel slot. Pioneered use of smart distributed peripherals in the slot industry which allowed code and hardware modularity and simplified regulatory approval of new features. Modularity allowed cost savings and price reductions since a customer paid for only features he desired at the time and could add others later. • In charge of 4 engineers to bring project in on time and on budget. Attended exhibitions, interfaced with investors and demonstrated products to customers.• Engineered and programmed a walk-around data gathering system based on Dallas One-Wire system programmed in Windows and PowerBuilder for back-end. This gained considerable interest from many in the slot industry. • Founded Aurora Enterprises.

    • With another person raised minimum seed capital to design, produce and market an incandescent-lighted linked progressive meter which employed a serial data link not commonly in use at the time. This greatly improved installation time, maintenance and reliability. One of first to use smart-peripherals in a system of this type. • P.I. Kaiser became one of two major players in the field. Negotiated partnership with Bally Gaming to provide link progressive meters domestically and internationally for about 8 years. This was of great financial importance to company since it now had backing from one of the only two major companies in the gaming industry at the time. • Designed and produced a retrofit board for Bally 1000 slots that significantly improved performance of that model. • Designed and implemented a walk-around data gathering system for Mills Jennings slots which employed an ultrasonic interface. Programmed a back-end PC based system to process data from said system.• Designed, engineered and prototyped a downhole recording water quality monitor. Presented this at a Western Water Quality Convention. Wrote firmware in machine code.• Engineered, prototyped, produced and sold a RGY (red, green, yellow) dot matrix linked progressive meter. Pioneered an extremely flexible sign enclosure construction method which allowed new shapes and much physically lighter sign enclosures to be constructed for indoor casino signs. Negotiated and procured a contract with IGT representative in Miami, FL to bid and build signage for many major cruise lines with gaming aboard.• Engineered, prototyped, manufactured and sold a slot machine retrofit kit which upgraded Bally electromechanical slots to a level of play that was not common at the time. Negotiated with Casino Purchasing Agent and sold retrofits in South Africa. Wrote firmware in C.

Engineered and developed the said system as chief engineer. • Designed and developed an ultrasonic intrinsically-safe level detector for underground fuel storage tanks that could detect a leak of less that 0.5 gal/hr (10,000 gal tank) tested by EPA and surpassed any future requirements proposed at that time. • Performed all hardware engineering design and aided in firmware design for the initial product. Participated in field performance tests and engineering presentations. Performed a key presentation for initial fundraising for D-Tech. • Engineered and prototyped a pollution detection buoy for lake and ocean deployment that could detect oil slicks on water and transmit an alarm. Product was prototyped for proof of concept, but never fielded. Wrote firmware in machine code.• Developed and prototyped a very reliable intrinsically safe detector for detecting presence of hydrocarbons on the surface of water. • Offered position by Tokheim in charge of D-tech engineering department after Tokheim acquisition of D-Tech. • Sought work as a consultant which was quickly found at Tapestron.
