The Training Engineer role is a global role that involves furthering the understanding and acceptance of SUSE’s solutions within customers, partners and internal employee teams. I am responsible for providing a structured curriculum of technical training and tools to address the needs of our customers, as well as our worldwide ecosystem of partners and our technical employees. The ability to communicate technical knowledge of SUSE products to a wide variety of audiences in written, presentation and verbal format is key to this role. I report to the Global Director of Enablement and Training and work closely with the product engineering, consulting services and product management teams.

On the 3rd March 2007 I set up the company Richard Mayne Ltd. I supply IT support, training and consultancy. For 2016 I am focusing on the Suse Storage and Suse Manager products. I am also focusing on the related open source products CEPH and Saltstack. I deliver training directly for Micro Focus and several other IT Training Companies throughout Europe and Scandinavia. I also supplying training directly to my customers. I engage directly with customers when consulting.

In May 2006 Interquad’s bid to buy QA was successful and the new company formed was called QA-IQ. My job changed from a mix of consultancy and training to purely training primarily working with customers from small businesses to large corporates in Novell, Unix and Linux operating systems along with networking and hardware courses.• Train the full range of Novell Netware courses.• Qualified as a Novell instructor for ZENWorks 7.• Qualified as a Novell instructor for Groupwise 7.• I teach networking and hardware support courses leading the A+ certifications.• I teach Unix and Linux courses.• I hold a current CNE for Netware 6.5.• QA were a Novell Platinum Training Partner as are Interquad. This is the highest Novell partner level. There are seven Novell qualified staff at QA Interquad. This involves the highest level of commitment and standards when dealing with all aspects of QA Interquad’s Novell business.• I am currently embarking on learning the Novell SUSE Linux products and working towards the Novell Certified Linux Professional certification and ultimately the Novell Certified Linux Engineer.

In 2001 QA bought the Computerland business in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. QA’s primary business is IT education with some consultancy. I taught the full range of Novell courses, and carried out consultancy on Novell products. I also taught Unix and Linux operating system courses along with networking and hardware.• I trained the full range of Novell Netware courses.• Provided high level support and consultancy to all sizes of customers from small business to large corporate organisations.• Teach QA networking and hardware support courses leading the A+ certifications.• Teach Unix and Linux courses.• Novell CNE 5, 6 and hold a current CNE for Netware 6.5.• QA are a Novell Platinum Training Partner the highest Novell partner level. We were the first in the UK.• I passed the Novell instructor evaluation for Deploying Open Enterprise Server on Netware and SUSE Linux in readiness for teaching a government funded research department.• I embarked on learning the Novell SUSE Linux products and working towards the Novell Certified Linux Professional certification and ultimately the Novell Certified Linux Engineer.• Linux Professional Institute Level 1 101 exam passed. This is the first of two exams leading to the LPI level one certification.• I recertified as a Microsoft Certified Trainer covering the Microsoft XP Desktop Technician accreditation.• Gained the CompTIA IT Project Plus Certification.• Became a member of the Institute of IT Training.

I joined Computerland who were looking for an experienced field service engineer interested in becoming a Novell Certified Instructor, CNI. CNI’s must be CNE qualified and the go on to sit the seven exam subjects passed for the CNE but at CNI level which requires a higher pass mark. I then did an Instructor Performance Evaluation at Novell’s Bracknell office. I found the mix of teaching and supporting Novell products complemented each other and has given me a good practical and academic technical grounding. The training aspect has improved my communication and listening skills.• Provided high level support and consultancy to all sizes of customers from small business to large corporate organisations.• Became a Certified Novell Instructor in 1993 and trained the full range of Novell Netware courses.• Certified Novell Engineer for Netware 2, 3, 4.• Enterprise Certified Novell Engineer (ECNE).• Master Certified Netware Engineer (MCNE).• Proved on site, telephone support and installation services for the complete range of Novell products.• Qualified as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. MCSE.• Qualified as a Microsoft Certified Trainer for the NT 4.0 MCSE track.

I started work after my degree with Microcentre and worked in a team of six engineers providing installation and support services for Compaq and IBM hardware, printers, PC’s and terminals along with Unix and Novell operating systems. I also gained skills in basic application support. During this time I learnt to work under pressure, resolve problems efficiently and ensure the job was carried out to the customers’ satisfaction. I also produced specifications for systems.• Installed complete networks from cabling to software delivery and configuration.• Gained the classic Certified Novell Engineer certification in 1992.• Installed and supported Novell Netware, SCO Unix and XENIX Operating systems.• Compaq Hardware accredited.• Serviced Compaq and IBM server hardware.• Maintained and repaired HP and Epson printers.
