I am a psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions in adults. I attended the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where I received my MD. I then did my residency in adult psychiatry at Duke University. I am Board-Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I carry a medical license in Texas, and will also have licenses in the states of New York and Mississippi.I am a passionate supporter of science- and evidence-based medicine. I consider myself an "old school" psychiatrist, in that have skill and experience in pharmacotherapy ("med management") AND psychotherapy, both.I believe good psychiatric care is good medical care, but it is also more than just "brain science". It requires a scientifically-grounded understanding of neuroscience and human medicine in general, of the principles of human behavior, and it also requires empathically and compassionately meeting every person as a unique, whole human being. My role for my patients is to offer the most scientifically valid advice available, in order to reduce psychiatric symptoms, to enrich self-understanding, and to serve a catalyst for growth and behavioral change, in order for anyone under my care to meet their goals (not MY goals) according to their own values.I often tell my patients: "You are the Captain of this ship, my job is to be your navigator."I am especially knowledgable about, and experienced in, the treatment of mood disorders (depressive and bipolar both), anxiety disorders, adult ADHD, functional/somatoform disorders, psychiatric aspects of neurological conditions, as well as personal/emotional growth and behavioral change. I believe I excel at addressing the complex "grey areas" of human psychology -- areas where empirical scientific evidence is limited, and judicious clinical experience and experienced judgement are critical.I have specific training and many years of experience in multiple forms of psychotherapy, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT), and others.I will soon begin working at Talkiatry.com, an online psychiatry-specific telemedicine company.
