· Over 29 years as a newspaper reporter and editor, I covered each candidate for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general of Virginia. They included Gerald Baliles, Doug Wilder, George Allen and Jim Gilmore. The last was Mark Warner, former governor and current senator.· I wrote features on George McGovern, former Sen. Bill Bradley, Ian McKellen, Shelby Foote, Charlton Heston and retired Gen. Alexander Haig. I interviewed – and was interviewed by – G. Gordon Liddy after he was released from prison.· As features editor for the Harrisonburg, VA, paper, I met monthly with the owner, retired Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr., and Ron Carrier, who was president of James Madison University. We decided which features I should write about.My last seven years as a reporter/editor included a stint as associate editor of The St. Augustine (Fla.) Record. I helped assign stories and edit other reporters’ copy. I was also in circuit court every morning, writing about every defendant charged with a felony. There were 13 capital murder cases during that time.
