Lead process engineer - £24m thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounding capacity expansion. AES had an overseeing design team in the contractor’s office (FWEL). AES took responsibility for the process design of the plant.

Involved checking all the design documents and drawings produced by the contractor (FWEL). This ensured that the needs of the operating plant were incorporated into the design and that operability issues were addressed.

Designing, engineering and commissioning minor capital projects up to a value of £1m on TPE compounding lines and maleic anhydride and rubber additive plants. The rubber additives process included projects on high-pressure reactors, feedstock transfer and product evaporation and distillation. Trained as HAZOP chair and acted as such many times.

Part of a team commissioning a Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) plant in Poland - The work was shift based and involved final check out, water batching and commissioning for the whole plant from chlorine vaporisation through to VCM storage.

Developed and managed the capital budget. Worked on crystallisation, evaporation and caustic soda handling projects. Worked an out of hours on-call rota to cover operational issues on the digester section of the plant.

Projects included, (1) the checking out, water batching and commissioning of an Acrylonitrile Styrene co-polymer manufacturing plant in Antwerp, (2) the design, checkout and commissioning of an Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene compounding line at Antwerp. (3) Transferred to the US CED office in St. Louis on assignment as a member of the process design team for the first world scale integrated ‘Roundup’ herbicide plant. I was responsible for the design of the oxidation reaction and the provision and subsequent separation of the activated carbon catalyst, (4) lead process design engineer on an Acrylonitrile (AN) emissions control projects on the AN production facility at Seal Sands, Teesside.
