I received my B.S. degree in Life Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and my Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. My independent research career began at the Basel Institute for Immunology in Basel, Switzerland where my work contributed to the understanding of how cell-type specific gene expression is controlled in the immune system. In 1992, I joined the faculty in the Department of Pathology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where I am currently the Chief of the Division of Biomedical Informatics, Director of the Division of Translational Pathology, and holder of the John H. Childers Professorship in Pathology. My current research interests combine bioinformatics, computational biology and laboratory experimentation to understand the complex interactions between pathogenic microorganisms and their hosts in the etiology of human disease.Specialties: experimental biologist, principal investigator, scientific advisory board member
