Richard V. Stevens retired as Communications Director for the City of Clarksville on Aug. 23, 2021, completing a distinquished 42-year career as a communications professional, journalist, and media executive.Stevens coordinated the city’s information, marketing and public relations activities for five years, August 2016 to August 2021. He brought a wealth of communications experience and deep knowledge of the community to his work at the City of Clarksville. Stevens retired Oct. 30, 2015, as News Director & General Manager of The Leaf-Chronicle, the top executive of the Clarksville, Tenn., media organization, an operating unit of Gannett Co. Inc. He began the position in June 2011, after serving as executive editor for 12 years.Richard moved to Clarksville in January 1999 after five years at The Tennessean in Nashville, where he served as assistant managing editor.A Missouri native, Stevens was educated in public schools and at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he majored in English. His first full-time newspaper job came in 1980 as a reporter and editor at the County Tribune, a weekly in his hometown of O’Fallon, Mo., near St. Louis. He moved on to senior editing roles at newspapers in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas and Washington State before joining The Gannett Co. in Nashville in 1994. As Leaf-Chronicle News Director & General Manager, Stevens oversaw the gathering and presentation of news content for the daily newspaper and its websites. As executive in charge, he managed The Leaf-Chronicle’s connection with the community and served on boards of the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, Aspire Clarksville Foundation and the Clarksville Montgomery County Education Foundation.Stevens is married to Jennifer Goode Stevens, an editor at Vanderbilt University and owner of GoodeEdits, an editing services company. They have two children and reside in Clarksville. Richard also has two adult children.
